Medieval and historical festivals in the bastide town of Mirepoix
The Fetes Historiques de Mirepoix are a major medieval and historical event held every year on the third weekend of July in the bastide town of Mirepoix, in Ariege. Created in 1979 by the association MAMET (Mirepoix Animation Memoires et Tradition), these festivals feature historical reenactments, a grand costume parade, a medieval market, street performances, and activities for all audiences, attracting several thousand spectators.
Since 1979, the Fetes Historiques de Mirepoix have been reviving the history of this remarkable 13th-century bastide in the heart of Ariege. Every year, on the third weekend of July, Place Marechal Leclerc, its medieval arcades, the parvis of Saint-Maurice Cathedral, and the town's alleyways transform into a vast open-air historical theater, welcoming several thousand spectators from across the Occitanie region and beyond.
The event is driven by the association MAMET (Mirepoix Animation Memoires et Tradition), a member of the French Federation of Historical Festivals and Shows. Each edition revolves around a different historical theme: music, dance, women in history, the Crusades, daily life in the Middle Ages... The highlight is the grand historical costume parade that winds through the streets of the bastide with hundreds of extras in period costumes, allegorical floats, and reenactment troupes.
Over three days, the festivals offer a vibrant program: a medieval encampment with artisans and ancient crafts, a medieval market under the arcades of the square, street performances (jugglers, fire-eaters, musicians, acrobats), ancient music concerts, living tableaux in the cathedral, medieval games, a medieval banquet, a historical mass, and activities for children. Access to most activities is free, making the Fetes Historiques a popular and family-friendly event.
The Fetes Historiques de Mirepoix are a highlight of the town's life, mobilizing dozens of volunteers, local businesses, associations, and residents. They contribute to the heritage and tourist appeal of this bastide town, listed among the Most Beautiful Detours in France, and help preserve the historical memory of the Cathar Pyrenees region.
The Fetes Historiques de Mirepoix are expected to be held on the third weekend of July 2026, i.e., July 17, 18, and 19. The MAMET association will prepare a new historical theme for this edition. The full program will be announced in spring 2026.
