Marseille International Film Festival
FIDMarseille is an international film festival founded in 1990 in Marseille, initially under the name "Biennale européenne du documentaire". Renamed FIDMarseille in 1999, the festival offers a week of competitive screenings of documentary and fiction films every July, welcoming around 23,000 spectators. Supported by the City of Marseille, the Sud Region, and the Ministry of Culture, it has established itself as an international benchmark for independent cinema.
The festival was born in 1990 under the name "Biennale européenne du documentaire". From its second edition, it was renamed "Vue sur les docs" before taking its current name, FIDMarseille, in 1999, marking an expansion of its program beyond just documentaries to encompass fiction films and hybrid forms. For over thirty-five years, the festival has championed demanding auteur cinema, on the fringes of commercial circuits.
Every year in July, FIDMarseille offers an intensive week of screenings, with around a hundred films presented — fifty of them in competition — and a majority in world or international premiere. The films are divided into several competitive and non-competitive sections, covering documentary, fiction, and experimental forms. The festival welcomes approximately 23,000 spectators per edition.
Beyond screenings, FIDMarseille develops support programs for filmmakers. FID Lab is a co-production platform that connects international directors and producers. FID Campus hosts young film professionals for a week of intensive training during the festival. FID also publishes books and journals on cinema.
Located at 14 allée Léon Gambetta in the 1st arrondissement of Marseille, FIDMarseille is supported by the City of Marseille, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region, the Ministry of Culture, and numerous French and international cultural institutions. The festival also develops an year-round programming outside its walls, with screenings, residencies, and international partnerships.
