Open-air photography festival in Douarnenez
The FOTO Festival is an open-air photography festival organized by the City of Douarnenez. Inaugurated in 2021, this free trail takes over the city's iconic sites with large-format prints. "Foto" means "photography" in Breton. The program explores environmental preservation and self-transcendence through the eyes of about ten photographers. An indoor exhibition "Report'Images" complements the trail with podcasts and videos.
Douarnenez, a city of images par excellence thanks to its famous Film Festival, has hosted a new summer artistic event since 2021: the FOTO Festival. This open-air photographic trail transforms the iconic sites of the sardine city into an open-air gallery, offering walkers an immersion into contemporary photography as they wander.
The FOTO Festival offers a photographic itinerary marked by large-format prints installed outdoors in the most emblematic locations of Douarnenez. The quays of Plomarc'h, the streets of Tréboul, the city center, and Pors Melen host the works of about ten photographers, creating a dialogue between the images and the urban and maritime landscape. The first edition exhibited 145 photographs by 13 photographers, including Franck Seguin, Yves-Marie Quéméneur, and Daesung Lee.
The FOTO Festival's program revolves around strong and contemporary themes. Environmental preservation is a major common thread, with photographic series documenting current ecological issues. Photographer Amelia Veitch notably created portraits of local farmers committed to preserving water quality, while other series explore the relationship between humans and the sea, a theme dear to Douarnenez. Self-transcendence forms the second axis of the program, with reports on exceptional human journeys.
In addition to the outdoor trail, the festival offers "Report'Images", an indoor exhibition featuring the works of ten photographers and eighty photographs. Each report is enhanced with a podcast and a video interview accessible via QR code, offering the visitor an immersive experience that extends the visual discovery through the photographers' words and the narrative of their artistic approach.
True to its commitment to accessibility, the FOTO Festival is entirely free. The outdoor trails are accessible at all times throughout the summer, from June to September, allowing everyone to discover the exhibitions at their own pace, as they stroll through Douarnenez. The festival also highlights local amateur photographers through partnerships with Douarnenez associations, anchoring photography in the city's social fabric.
