Hiking, mountain biking, and trail running in the heart of nature through the Argonne forest
The Grande Traversée de l'Argonne (GTA) is a sporting and nature event that takes place annually between the Ardennes and the Meuse, in the heart of the Argonne forest. Over 100 km with 1600 m of elevation gain, from Mont-Dieu to Beaulieu-en-Argonne, the event offers hiking, running, and mountain biking for all levels. Organized by Argonne PNR, the GTA promotes the natural heritage of the Argonne region through five days of sports and family activities, including youth raids, obstacle races, and guided walks.
The Grande Traversée de l'Argonne (GTA) is a major sporting event that connects Mont-Dieu in the Ardennes to Beaulieu-en-Argonne in the Meuse, over a 100 km course with 1600 meters of positive elevation gain. This challenge can be completed in one or two days, in relay, or as a free route over three to five days using the GR14 Argonne and surrounding trails.
The event spans five days and offers a varied program suitable for all ages and athletic levels. Key activities include:
Three loops of 7, 12, and 20 km starting from Beaulieu-en-Argonne allow you to discover the rolling landscapes of the Meuse Argonne. A 7 km guided walk is also offered with staggered departures between 8 am and 10 am.
Three marked circuits of 17, 25, and 45 km cross the Argonne forest and offer technical routes adapted to different skill levels.
Nature running events are organized on the Argonne trails, allowing trail runners to test themselves against the region's terrain.
A multi-sport raid for 10-17 year olds combines forest mountain biking over 7 km, archery, mini-games, and canoeing, offering a supervised day of adventure for younger participants.
A family obstacle race with staggered starts from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm, blending physical effort and fun in an exceptional natural setting.
The Argonne forest, a vast wooded massif between Champagne and Lorraine, is a remarkable natural setting. Its hills, valleys, ponds, and biodiversity make it an ideal playground for outdoor activities. The GTA contributes to promoting this territory by inviting participants to discover its landscape, historical, and cultural heritage.
The village of Beaulieu-en-Argonne, listed among the most beautiful sites in the department, hosts the finish line of the traverse and the final day of the event. Its ancient monastic press, abbey ruins, and forest panoramas make it an iconic arrival point.
