Arts and Crafts on Display in a Picture-Postcard Village
Every spring, the village of Lyons-la-Forêt — ranked among the most beautiful villages in France with its half-timbered houses, medieval market hall, and picturesque streets — hosts the Journées Artisanales, a traditional event organized by the Lyons-la-Forêt Committee. For three days, artisans and artists from all over Normandy and beyond take over the village streets, squares, and spaces to exhibit and demonstrate their exceptional skills.
The range of crafts represented reflects the richness and diversity of artistic craftsmanship: mosaic artists, painters, wood sculptors, artisanal jewelers, master glassmakers specializing in stained glass, cutlers, fresco artists, artistic zinc workers, basket weavers, ceramicists, leatherworkers, glassblowers, and creators of unique pieces from recycled materials. Each artisan exhibits their creations and explains the gestures, techniques, and passion that drive their craft.
Introductory Workshops for Everyone
One of the highlights of the Journées Artisanales is the emphasis on passing on skills. Numerous introductory workshops are offered throughout the weekend, without reservation, for both children and adults. Visitors can try their hand at stone carving, basket weaving, textile painting, stained glass, enameling on copper, and many other craft techniques, guided by passionate professionals.
These participatory workshops provide a genuine education in artisanal gestures, allowing everyone to discover the patience, precision, and creativity required for these exceptional crafts. They make the Journées Artisanales an event particularly suited for families and young audiences.
An Event Rooted in Norman Heritage
The choice of Lyons-la-Forêt as the setting for this event is no accident. This Norman village, whose half-timbered architecture is itself the result of ancestral craftsmanship, offers a heritage setting in perfect harmony with the arts and crafts presented there. The medieval market hall, the half-timbered facades, and the flower-filled gardens create an authentic backdrop that naturally enhances the artisanal creations.
A friendly and free event, the Journées Artisanales de Lyons-la-Forêt is part of the long tradition of Norman art and craft markets, contributing to the promotion of arts and crafts and the cultural influence of this exceptional forest region, at the heart of Europe's largest beech forest.
