Historical reenactment of Joan of Arc's arrival in Chinon and her meeting with Charles VII
Every year in April, the town of Chinon commemorates one of the most significant episodes in its history: the arrival of Joan of Arc and her meeting with the Dauphin Charles VII at the Royal Fortress in 1429. La Chevauchée de Jeanne is a large, free historical reenactment that unfolds in the streets of the medieval city and up to the Fortress. A horse parade, medieval encampment, historical sketches, artisan market, and a grand costume parade immerse visitors in the heart of the 15th century. The event is organized by the association Jeanne en Lumière and mobilizes hundreds of costumed extras and volunteers.
On February 23, 1429, after eleven days of riding from Vaucouleurs, Joan of Arc arrived in Chinon to meet the Dauphin Charles, future Charles VII. This foundational episode in the history of France is commemorated each year during La Chevauchée de Jeanne, a life-size historical reenactment that animates the streets of Chinon and its Royal Fortress.
The day begins at 10 am with the opening of activities at the Collégiale Saint-Mexme, one of Chinon's oldest religious buildings. At 11 am, a historical sketch stages the meeting between Joan of Arc and Robert de Baudricourt, captain of Vaucouleurs who provided her with an escort to Chinon. Throughout the day, a medieval encampment welcomes visitors with weapon demonstrations, participatory workshops, ancient games, and an artisan market.
The most anticipated moment occurs around 3:30 pm: Joan of Arc and her companions arrive on horseback, acclaimed by the crowd gathered in the streets of Chinon. At 4 pm, a grand costume parade sets off through the town, bringing together hundreds of extras in period costumes—knights, ladies, squires, men-at-arms, peasants, and artisans—who proceed towards the Royal Fortress in a festive and solemn atmosphere.
Around 5 pm, the procession reaches the Royal Fortress where the recognition scene is performed: Joan of Arc identifies the Dauphin Charles VII hidden among his courtiers. This open-air theatrical reenactment, set against the magnificent backdrop of the fortress, is the highlight of the day. Entry to the Fortress is free for this occasion. Around 7 pm, the procession descends back towards the Collégiale Saint-Mexme for the closing of the day.
La Chevauchée de Jeanne is organized by the association Jeanne en Lumière with the support of the town of Chinon and numerous volunteers. This entirely free event mobilizes the local community and attracts visitors from all over France. Participants are encouraged to come in costume to contribute to the immersive atmosphere of this day that celebrates the unbreakable bond between Chinon and the epic of the Maid of Orléans.
