A Month of Wonder in Carcassonne
Since 2005, Magie de Noël has transformed Carcassonne into a true enchanted village for over a month. From early December to early January, the city's squares and streets light up with thousands of lights, hosting a rich program of activities, shows, and attractions for all ages. In 2024-2025, the event celebrated its 20th edition, solidifying its status as the largest Christmas market in the South of France. This initiative, supported by the City of Carcassonne, has become a major economic and tourist driver for the region, attracting visitors from all over France and Spain.
The Iconic Sites of Magie de Noël
Magie de Noël unfolds across several iconic city sites:
- Square Gambetta: The Enchanted Garden, a magical open-air exhibition with enchanting automatons and dreamlike decorations, accessible for free. An artisan market offers handmade treasures.
- Place Carnot: The square is decorated with wooden chalets and hosts an ice rink surrounded by gourmet food stalls.
- Place du Général de Gaulle: An elevated rooftop with cable cars offering panoramic views of the medieval Cité, along with virtual reality attractions, curling, and a Christmas laser game.
- Square André-Chénier: The Santa Claus Park with carousels and rides for children, as well as a Ferris wheel.
A Festive and Family-Friendly Program
Throughout the month, Magie de Noël offers a dense program of activities: Christmas parades, light shows, giant bubbles and light fountains, medieval camps in the Cité, visual immersion into the Christmas world at the Prosper Montagné market, and numerous creative workshops for children. The shopping streets of the Bastide are illuminated and decorated, creating a warm atmosphere conducive to strolling and Christmas shopping.
An Unmissable Event in the South
With its 20th edition in 2024-2025, Carcassonne's Magie de Noël has established itself as one of the largest Christmas events in the South of France. The event attracts tens of thousands of visitors annually, including a significant number of Spanish tourists drawn by the scale of the event and the beauty of the setting—the illuminated medieval Cité in the background. Magie de Noël significantly contributes to the local economy by extending the tourist season well beyond the summer.
