Festival of brass bands and street arts
La Vie en Reuz is a free biennial festival that has taken over the streets, quays, and squares of Douarnenez since 2011. The Breton word “Reuz” means noise, in the sense of a festive and popular atmosphere. For three days, about fifteen brass bands, street arts companies, circus artists, and actors transform the city into an open-air stage, celebrating a subversive and accessible culture for all.
Since its creation in 2011 by a collective of Douarnenez associations, La Vie en Reuz has become a must-attend event in Brittany. Every two years, this free festival, held outside the tourist season, animates different neighborhoods of the city for three days with street performances, concerts, and brass bands.
The festival hosts about fifteen brass bands and several street arts companies, as well as brass band formations. The streets, quays, and squares are transformed into improvised stage venues where musicians, circus artists, and actors create emotions and sensations. The program favors diversity, innovation, and accessibility, celebrating local musical culture while promoting community engagement and artistic discovery for all audiences.
The brass bands, major players in Douarnenez's cultural life, are honored and parade throughout the city during these three days of celebration. The festival also offers batucadas, entertainment, games, and fest-noz, creating a friendly and participatory atmosphere where locals and visitors mingle with artists in a collective celebration of popular culture.
Among recent editions: June 2019 (full edition), June 2021 (micro-edition adapted to the health context with entertainment on Port-Rhu and in the city), June 2023, and June 2025 with Zord Quartet, Fall Foen, Broken Brass, Groove Time, and Los Tres Puntos among others on the program.
The festival takes place mainly at the Centre parking lot (13 rue du Quartier Maître Guillou, 154 places) and throughout the city of Douarnenez. Entertainment takes place on Port-Rhu, Boulevard Camille Réaud, and in various neighborhoods.
Free festival and accessible to all. Performances take place Friday evening from 8 p.m., Saturday evening around 10:30 p.m., and Sunday with performances until after midnight. Possibility to register as a volunteer by email or phone.
