ℹ️ 2026 edition not organized. Les Petites Cités de Caractère de la Vendée are not organizing an edition of Les Estivales de Caractère in 2026: the organizer explicitly states this on the festival's official website. No concerts or programming are planned this summer in the heritage villages of Southern Vendée. A return of the festival is mentioned for a later year ("Have a great summer and see you next year!").
No edition of Les Estivales de Caractère in 2026
At the time of our editorial verification (May 2026), the festival's official website (festival-vendee.com) clearly announces that no edition of Les Estivales de Caractère will take place in 2026: "Les Petites Cités de Caractère de la Vendée are not organizing an edition of Les Estivales de Caractère in 2026."
Therefore, no concerts are scheduled this summer in Vouvant, Foussais-Payré, Mouchamps, or in the other heritage villages of the Vendée bocage usually associated with the festival (Apremont, Mallèvre, Mortagne-sur-Sèvre, Noirmoutier-en-l'Île, Pouzauges, Rives-d'Autise, Tiffauges…).
The organizer, the association Les Petites Cités de Caractère de la Vendée, suggests a return for a later year ("Have a great summer and see you next year!"). As a reminder, the last edition held was the 26th, from July 8 to August 2, 2025. No date has been confirmed to date for the return of this musical itinerancy in Southern Vendée.

Les Estivales de Caractère: Classical Music as Heritage in Vendée Villages
Since their foundation in 2000, Les Estivales de Caractère have forged a unique identity in the landscape of summer festivals: that of a demanding yet popular musical event, rooted in the architectural heritage of Southern Vendée.
Heritage Villages as Natural Stages
The Estivales' approach is radical and appealing: to make each concert a meeting between a musical work and an exceptional heritage site. Vouvant, labeled «Most Beautiful Village in France», with its Mélusine tower and Romanesque collegiate church, has hosted some of the festival's most anticipated concerts. Foussais-Payré, with its church featuring some of the most beautiful Romanesque sculptures in the Vendée bocage, offers enchanting natural acoustics. Mouchamps, birthplace of Marshal Foch, adds its historical dimension to the festival's musical character. Over the editions, the itinerancy has also led the public to Apremont, Mallèvre, Mortagne-sur-Sèvre, Noirmoutier-en-l'Île, Pouzauges, Rives-d'Autise, or Tiffauges.
An Ambitious Musical Program
The program of Les Estivales de Caractère combines baroque music, chamber music, vocal music, romantic music, and sometimes jazz, with constant artistic rigor. Each edition invited leading artists and ensembles — international soloists, string quartets, vocal ensembles, and chamber orchestras — for a series of concerts spread throughout the summer. The festival paid particular attention to young performers, offering a showcase for emerging artists alongside established musicians.
Itinerancy as a Philosophy
The itinerant aspect of the festival is at the heart of its identity. The public was invited to move from village to village, to discover or rediscover the architectural treasures of the Vendée bocage between two concerts. On some evenings, a country picnic preceded the concert, transforming the musical evening into a true cultural stroll through the Vendée countryside.
Romanesque Vendée in the Spotlight
Les Estivales de Caractère play a central role in promoting the Romanesque heritage of Vendée, often little known to the general public. The Romanesque churches and chapels of the Vendée bocage — with their sculpted portals, historiated capitals, and light-filled naves — constitute a heritage of primary value, of which the festival has become one of the best ambassadors.
