Castres' open-air dance festival
Les Extravadanses is a free dance festival organized every July by the City of Castres. Since 2008, it has taken over the squares and gardens of the city center for a week of performances celebrating dance in all its diversity: contemporary, hip-hop, flamenco, neoclassical, salsa, modern jazz, tap, and rock. About twenty free performances bring together professional and amateur companies in a festive and accessible atmosphere, accompanied by workshops, masterclasses, and documentary screenings.
Since 2008, the Les Extravadanses festival has transformed the public spaces of Castres into open-air dance stages every summer. Organized by the City of Castres as part of its summer cultural program, this free event is dedicated to dance in all its diversity, from contemporary to hip-hop, from flamenco to neoclassical, from salsa to modern jazz, including tap and rock.
Each edition offers around twenty free shows over a week in early July. Squares, gardens, courtyards, and green spaces in Castres become ephemeral stages where professional companies mingle with dance schools and local associations. The festival thus offers a comprehensive overview of contemporary choreographic aesthetics, in a spirit of openness and sharing.
The shows take place outdoors, most often in the early evening, creating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Families, dance enthusiasts, and the simply curious gather in an exceptional setting to discover varied and often surprising artistic proposals.
Beyond the performances, Les Extravadanses offers a rich program of discovery workshops and dance masterclasses open to all levels. Classical, contemporary, hip-hop, salsa: everyone can get started or improve under the guidance of professional dancers. Documentary screenings on dance, potluck meals, and exhibitions complete the program, making the festival a true week of celebration of movement and choreographic creation.
Les Extravadanses is part of an ambitious summer cultural program led by the City of Castres, which also includes the Couleurs du Monde festival in August. By investing public space and offering complete free access, the festival helps to democratize dance and make it accessible to the widest possible audience. Over the years, Les Extravadanses has built a loyal following among a large and diverse audience, from families to connoisseurs, in an atmosphere that honors the festive spirit of the Tarn region.
