The Middle Ages on the outskirts of Châteauroux
The Médiévales de Déols were born in 2022 from the Déols municipality's desire to highlight the commune's rich medieval heritage, particularly its Abbey Notre-Dame, founded in 917 and once one of the most important Benedictine abbeys in France. Located on the outskirts of Châteauroux, Déols preserves the impressive remains of this abbey that flourished throughout the Middle Ages under the protection of the lords of Déols, including the legendary Ebbes le Noble and Denise de Déols.
A medieval village in the abbey gardens
Each year, the abbey gardens are transformed into a true medieval village for a weekend. A living history camp recreated by medieval reenactment groups allows visitors to discover daily life in the Middle Ages: crafts, cooking, weaponry, combat techniques. An artisan and food market offers medieval-inspired products, with free pitches and electricity for exhibitors. Workshops and introductory sessions are offered to all ages to immerse themselves in medieval life.
Shows, jousts, and parades
The program of Les Médiévales de Déols is rich in shows. Equestrian jousts and knights' tournaments animate the meadow, while costumed parades traverse the old town. On Saturday evening, the abbey cloister hosts a theatrical performance, such as the play "Aliénor, 50 ans en 50 minutes" by the company ESTOCADE, specialists in artistic fencing. A temporary, semi-nocturnal museum is open on Saturday evening in the abbey museum rooms, offering a torchlit tour.
A free and unifying event
Admission to Les Médiévales de Déols is completely free, making it a popular event accessible to everyone. Medieval costume rental is available on-site to allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in the atmosphere. With over 10,000 visitors expected, Les Médiévales de Déols have established themselves in just a few editions as a major event for medieval heritage in the Centre-Val de Loire region, highlighting the exceptional history of this small commune in Berry.
