Chamber music festival in the heart of Perche
Founded in 1979 by harpsichord maker Jacques Brault under the name "Juin Musical", the festival was renamed Les Musicales de Mortagne et du Perche in 2016 to reflect its roots throughout the Perche region. It is one of the oldest chamber music festivals in Normandy, with over four decades of high-quality musical programming.
Each edition is built around a thematic thread that guides the programming. The 2025 edition highlights wind instruments — flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, sackbut, and medieval trumpet — with each concert particularly featuring one or more instruments from this family. The opening concert features the Ensemble Ouranos, the most famous French wind quintet, while the closing concert brings together the vocal ensemble Irini in an expanded formation with medieval wind instruments.
Concerts take place in the churches and heritage buildings of Mortagne-au-Perche and surrounding towns, offering remarkable acoustics and an exceptional architectural setting. The medieval town of Mortagne-au-Perche, perched on its promontory, provides an ideal backdrop for these musical events.
The festival spans three consecutive weekends between late June and early July, offering around ten concerts in total. This format allows festival-goers to combine musical discovery with exploration of the heritage and landscapes of Perche, a region popular for its manors, rolling countryside, and lifestyle.
Over the years, Les Musicales de Mortagne has built a solid reputation in the world of chamber music, attracting top artists and a loyal audience from all over Normandy and the Paris region. The festival is a member of France Festivals, the national federation of music and performing arts festivals, attesting to the quality of its programming.
