Classical and jazz festival in an open-air ancient theater in Burgundy
Since 2001, Les Nuits du Mont Rome has transformed the Théâtre David de Saint-Sernin-du-Plain into an open-air temple of classical and jazz music every summer. Created by the Association Délirique, this festival offers a week of exceptional concerts in an open-air theater nestled on the heights of Mont Rome, overlooking the vineyards of the Côte chalonnaise. String quartets, symphony orchestras, big bands, and piano recitals follow one another under the Burgundian stars.
The Théâtre David, perched on Mont Rome in Saint-Sernin-du-Plain, is a magical place: an open-air theater built into the hillside, offering a panoramic view of the vineyards of the Côte chalonnaise. It is in this natural and mineral setting, reminiscent of ancient Mediterranean theaters, that the Association Délirique founded in 2001 a classical and jazz music festival that has become one of the major cultural events in Southern Burgundy.
Every July, Les Nuits du Mont Rome offers a full week of concerts mixing classical music, chamber music, and jazz. The programming, of remarkable artistic rigor, brings in top-tier artists. The 2025 edition notably featured violinists Eva Zavaro and Clément Lefebvre, the Percussions Claviers de Lyon with their show "Diables & Démons", the Orchestre Symphonique Dijon Bourgogne, the Quatuor Hanson accompanied by pianist Adam Laloum, and The Amazing Keystone Big Band with Neima Naouri in a tribute to Judy Garland.
The festival unfolds in two venues with complementary atmospheres. The church of Dracy-lès-Couches hosts the opening weekend in an intimate and contemplative setting, ideal for chamber music and duos. The Théâtre David in Saint-Sernin-du-Plain then takes over for open-air symphonic concerts and big bands, under the starry July sky. The Sunday Musical Day, dedicated to youth and education, opens the festival to families and young music lovers.
Chaired by Elsa Cretin, the Association Délirique carries a mission of transmission and cultural openness. Since 2010, the festival has hosted 11 artistic residencies, offering artists creative time in the inspiring setting of Mont Rome. Since 2011, 10 educational workshops have enabled the staging of opera productions with young amateurs and the founding of the Children's Choir of Les Nuits du Mont Rome, demonstrating a lasting presence in the local educational fabric. With approximately 2,000 spectators each year, the festival combines artistic excellence with accessibility.
