Street arts festival in Le Creusot
Les Rugissantes transforms Le Creusot into a giant playground for street arts for three days in July. About fifteen companies of circus, street theater, dance, and puppetry from France and Europe will take over the Château de la Verrerie and its surroundings for about thirty open-air performances. A family-friendly, joyful, and free festival that makes the city vibrate to the rhythm of itinerant shows and street performances.
Every July, Le Creusot comes alive to the rhythm of Les Rugissantes, a street arts festival that has become a must-attend event on the Burgundy cultural scene. For three days, artists take over the city and invite the public to open the doors to another world, transforming squares, courtyards, and parks into ephemeral stages where circus, street theater, dance, puppetry, and itinerant shows mingle.
The festival takes place in and around the Château de la Verrerie, the former headquarters of the royal crystal factory and a symbol of Le Creusot's industrial heritage. The castle courtyard, the Parc de la Verrerie, the esplanade Simone Veil, the castle forecourt, and the surrounding streets host the companies for about thirty performances over three days.
Each edition brings together about fifteen companies from France and Europe — Italy, Belgium, Spain — to present original creations designed for public spaces. From contemporary circus to gestural theater, from giant puppets to acrobatic dance, the shows offer a multitude of surprises that emerge around the street corners.
Les Rugissantes is distinguished by its participatory dimension. Artistic workshops involving residents and companies are organized before the festival, allowing the public to become active participants in the event. In 2025, the "ROUGE" project, led with the company Les Plastiqueurs, mobilized residents starting in February to collectively build a monumental red installation that set the tone for the "rOugissantes" edition.
Les Rugissantes is part of the Les Beaux Bagages program, a summer cultural season organized by the City of Le Creusot, which also includes the Les Folles Escales festival in August. The Grand Bal des Intrigants on Friday evening and the fireworks on Sunday beautifully conclude this festive weekend, with food trucks and local restaurateurs to accompany the spectators.
The 7th edition of Les Rugissantes will be held from July 10 to 12, 2026, in Le Creusot. The street arts festival will take over the Château de la Verrerie and its surroundings with a new program of circus, street theater, and itinerant performances.
