Lieurey Herring Fair
A Norman tradition born from a herring shipment stranded by snow
2026
About Lieurey Herring Fair
In the town of Lieurey, in the Eure department, the Foire aux Harengs (Herring Fair) keeps alive a tradition dating back to the Hundred Years' War, when a shipment of herring, blocked by heavy snow, was sold on the spot to avoid wasting the catch. The event takes place every November 11th in the village and features a herring-eating contest, open to all enthusiasts.
