Château-Thierry (02) On hold

About Living Heritage

For over twenty years, the Festival Patrimoine Vivant gathered thousands of visitors every third weekend of September at the medieval castle of Château-Thierry, in Aisne. Organized since 1996 by the association Patrimoine Vivant, this festive and family-friendly event celebrated heritage through historical reenactments, medieval encampments, live shows, Celtic and folk music concerts, combat demonstrations, a craft market, and activities for all ages. Its last publicly documented edition was the 24th, held on September 20, 21, and 22, 2019; the festival no longer seems to be held since then.

ℹ️ Festival discontinued. The Festival Patrimoine Vivant no longer seems to be held. Its last publicly documented edition was the 24th, organized on September 20, 21, and 22, 2019, at the medieval castle of Château-Thierry. No edition has been announced since by the association or the city. The 2026 cultural program of the medieval castle (published by the municipality) does not mention this festival: the entry is kept as an archive for those seeking information about this event. If a new edition were to be organized, this page would be updated.

A festival at the heart of Château-Thierry medieval castle

From 1996 to 2019, the Festival Patrimoine Vivant annually took over the medieval castle of Château-Thierry, a fortress overlooking the Marne valley, for a weekend celebrating historical and cultural heritage. Created by the association Patrimoine Vivant, a French non-profit organization (association loi 1901), this festival had become a highlight of the cultural life of Aisne and the Hauts-de-France region. The association aimed to promote heritage in all its forms: architectural, historical, musical, and cultural.

Historical reenactments and medieval encampments

The heart of the festival beat to the rhythm of life-size historical reenactments. On the esplanade and within the castle grounds, medieval encampments came alive with troupes and artistic companies from all over France. Visitors watched demonstrations of weapon combat, discovered ancient forging and craft techniques, and participated in medieval games for all ages. A craft market offered creations and goods inspired by ancestral traditions.

Live shows, music, and dance

The program was not limited to the medieval era. Each edition offered a rich palette of live shows: Celtic and folk-rock music concerts, folk dances, cabaret acts, dance performances, street entertainment, and sound and light shows. Artistic troupes and companies took over the various spaces of the castle to create a festive and immersive atmosphere, blending eras and disciplines. Troubadours, jugglers, musicians, and dancers animated the site from morning to evening. The 24th and last edition (2019) notably welcomed Bonbon Vodou, San Salvador, Mes Souliers Sont Rouges, Epsylon, and La Punkaravane.

A family-friendly and popular event

The Festival Patrimoine Vivant was distinguished by its family-friendly and accessible nature. Participatory workshops allowed children to learn medieval skills: handling foam swords, calligraphy, archery. Visitors were invited to come in costume to immerse themselves in the atmosphere, and the festival offered on-site catering inspired by medieval cuisine and local specialties. For over two decades, the event contributed to the promotion of the medieval castle of Château-Thierry and the cultural influence of southern Aisne.

The end of an adventure

In the late 2010s, the festival experienced significant financial difficulties, with the association having exhausted its reserves and publicly warning about the fragility of its survival. After the 24th edition in September 2019, no new edition has been documented. The association Patrimoine Vivant remained occasionally active with other events (concerts), but the major medieval gathering in September at the castle no longer appears on Château-Thierry's cultural agenda.
