The Marché aux Vins d'Ampuis: nearly a century of wine tradition
Founded in 1928, the Marché aux Vins d'Ampuis has become over the decades one of the most prestigious wine events in France and the essential meeting for the Côte-Rôtie appellation. Organized every January by the Syndicat des Vignerons de Côte-Rôtie, this market brings together the best producers from the Northern Rhône Valley for four days in the Salle Polyvalente d'Ampuis, a small wine village nestled on the steep slopes overlooking the Rhône.
An exceptional terroir
Ampuis is the birthplace of Côte-Rôtie, one of the oldest wine appellations in France, whose terraced vines have overlooked the Rhône since Roman times. The two mythical slopes of Côte Brune and Côte Blonde produce red wines of recognized elegance and complexity worldwide. The Marché aux Vins d'Ampuis allows you to discover the full diversity of this appellation through 100 different Côte-Rôtie vintages, a unique panorama offered by 66 winemakers.
The appellations in the spotlight
Beyond Côte-Rôtie, the market highlights all the appellations of the Northern Rhône Valley:
- Condrieu: aromatic white wines from the Viognier grape variety
- Saint-Joseph: full-bodied reds and elegant whites
- Cornas: powerful and deep Syrah
- Hermitage: a mythical cru with wines for long aging
- Saint-Péray: sparkling and still whites
- Crozes-Hermitage: the largest appellation in the northern valley
In total, over 300 wines are offered for tasting at the 66 market stands.
A convivial and gourmet event
The Marché aux Vins d'Ampuis is not just about tasting. An outdoor catering area offers gourmet food in a relaxed atmosphere, allowing visitors to extend their experience with the flavors of the Rhône terroir. The event attracts several thousand visitors each year, from discerning oenophiles to curious amateurs, coming from all over France and abroad to discover or rediscover the wine treasures of this exceptional region.
A living heritage of the Rhône vineyard
With almost a century of existence, the Marché aux Vins d'Ampuis embodies the transmission and promotion of ancestral wine-making know-how. It contributes to the international influence of Rhône Valley wines and is a highlight of the economic and cultural life of the southern Rhône department.
