The traditional market for foie gras and fattened ducks in the southern Landes
The Marchés au Gras de Peyrehorade are one of the last great fattened produce markets in the Landes department. Every Wednesday morning from mid-November to mid-March, the Peyrehorade market halls host producers and breeders offering fresh foie gras, whole fattened ducks, fattened poultry, confits, magrets, and gizzards. Frequented by connoisseurs who arrive at dawn to negotiate the best pieces, this market perpetuates an ancestral gastronomic tradition and offers direct and privileged contact between producers and consumers.
The Marchés au Gras de Peyrehorade are among the last great traditional fattened produce markets in the Landes department. Every winter, the covered market halls of this small town in the southern Landes host local producers who perpetuate the age-old know-how of raising and force-feeding waterfowl.
Every Wednesday morning, from mid-November to mid-March, the Peyrehorade market halls transform into a lively trading place where discerning buyers arrive as early as 8 a.m. to secure the best pieces. The atmosphere is that of a traditional Gascon market, where exchanges between producers and buyers take place in a friendly and traditional spirit.
On the market stalls, visitors find a complete range of products: fresh duck and goose foie gras, whole fattened ducks, fattened poultry, magrets, confits, gizzards, carcasses, rillettes, pâtés, and semi-preserved products. Breeders also offer semi-cooked foie gras, magrets stuffed with foie gras, and other ready-to-eat artisanal preparations.
Located in the Vallée des Gaves, at the confluence of the Gave d'Oloron and the Gave de Pau, Peyrehorade is a land of farming and gastronomy. The town is also famous for its Adour kiwi and its local products. The fattened produce market is part of this tradition of quality and authenticity that makes the gastronomy of the southern Landes renowned.
The Peyrehorade fattened produce market is a privileged place for direct exchange between producers and consumers. The breeders, often present for several generations, willingly share their cooking tips, their family recipes, and their passion for their profession. It is this human dimension that makes this traditional market so rich.
Peyrehorade is accessible via the D817 from Dax (30 min) or the D33 from Bayonne (35 min). Parking spaces are available near the market halls, on the market square and in the adjacent streets. During the fattened produce market season, crowds are significant, and it is advisable to park a little further from the town center.
The Peyrehorade station is served by the TER Nouvelle-Aquitaine lines connecting Bayonne to Dax. The market halls are about a 5-minute walk from the station, making the market easily accessible by public transport.
The Marchés au Gras are held every Wednesday morning, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., from mid-November to mid-March. It is strongly advised to arrive early, from 8 a.m., to benefit from the best selection of products and negotiate directly with producers.
Access to the market is completely free. Product prices are set by each producer and vary according to the quality, size, and weight of the items offered. It is customary to negotiate with the breeders.
