Grand medieval festival within the walls of the fortified castle of Lichtenberg, in the heart of the Vosges du Nord
Lichtenberg Castle is one of the most impressive monuments in Alsace. Built in the 13th century on a rocky outcrop overlooking the village of Lichtenberg and the wooded hills of the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, this fortress has endured through the centuries, preserving its ramparts, towers, and moats. Restored and developed as a cultural venue, the castle now hosts exhibitions, shows, and events throughout the year, with the medieval festival being the highlight.
The medieval festival transforms the castle and its surroundings into a true medieval camp. Historical reenactment groups set up their camps within the fortified walls, complete with tents, banners, and period equipment. Visitors can witness knight tournaments, equestrian shows, sword and shield combat demonstrations, and performances by troubadours, jugglers, and minstrels who entertain in the castle courtyards and terraces.
Numerous participatory workshops allow visitors, young and old, to try their hand at medieval crafts: calligraphy, coin minting, weaving, pottery, and stone carving. Medieval artisans exhibit and demonstrate their skills: blacksmithing, leatherwork, heraldry, illumination. Old wooden games — skittles, archery, stilts — entertain families in a joyful and educational atmosphere.
In 2026, the medieval festival is evolving and taking on a new dimension under the name 'Medieval Festival of Lichtenberg Castle'. From July 3 to July 12, 2026, the castle will offer 10 days of medieval entertainment with an extended duration, new activities, in-depth historical reenactments, shows for all audiences, treasure hunts, guided tours, conferences, and craft demonstrations in a reimagined immersive atmosphere.
Lichtenberg Castle is managed by the Communauté de Communes du Pays de La Petite Pierre and offers contemporary art exhibitions, live performances, and educational workshops throughout the year. The medieval festival is part of this ambitious cultural program that makes the castle a place of life and discovery in the heart of the Northern Vosges.
The Lichtenberg Castle Medieval Festival returns in 2026 in an unprecedented 10-day format, from Friday, July 3 to Sunday, July 12. Two highlight weekends frame a week of daily activities: a medieval market with around thirty artisans, an opening medieval banquet, a Goljan folk concert, historical re-enactments, conferences, treasure hunts, guided tours, and craft workshops in the fortress of the Northern Vosges.
In 2026, the Lichtenberg Castle medieval festival takes on a new dimension and becomes “The Lichtenberg Castle Medieval Festival”. From Friday, July 3 to Sunday, July 12, 2026, the castle will for the first time offer an edition spread over two highlight weekends framing a full week of activities, totaling 10 days of medieval immersion.
The first weekend highlights the medieval market with around thirty local artisans (pottery, jewelry, costumes, calligraphy, medieval delicacies) who demonstrate their craftsmanship live. Visitors can also enjoy medieval music and dances, wandering shows, and wooden games in a festive and interactive atmosphere. On Saturday, July 4 at 7:15 PM, the group Goljan will give a folk concert of authentic medieval songs and original compositions (included in the entrance ticket).
From Monday to Friday, the castle offers daily guided tours (11 AM and 3 PM), an autonomous immersive treasure hunt, and a renewed daily workshop: watercolor on Monday, basketry on Tuesday, educational farm on Wednesday, wild plant syrups on Thursday, stone carving on Friday.
The closing weekend is dedicated to transmission and history: large-scale historical re-enactments, conferences led by specialists, in-depth guided tours, and demonstrations allow visitors to delve into medieval life and discover the history of the castle.
On Friday evening, July 3, the castle opens the Medieval Festival with a medieval banquet where guests — encouraged to come in costume — share medieval-inspired specialties in a musical atmosphere. Reservations via the online ticketing system.
