Grand medieval festival within the walls of the fortified castle of Lichtenberg, in the heart of the Vosges du Nord
Every year, the majestic Lichtenberg Castle, a medieval fortress perched on its rocky outcrop in the heart of the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park, hosts a grand medieval festival. Knight tournaments, equestrian shows, troubadours and jugglers, old wooden games, craft workshops, folk concerts, and historical reenactments immerse visitors in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. In 2026, the event will evolve into an unprecedented 10-day format under the name 'Medieval Festival of Lichtenberg Castle'.
Lichtenberg Castle is one of the most impressive monuments in Alsace. Built in the 13th century on a rocky outcrop overlooking the village of Lichtenberg and the wooded hills of the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, this fortress has endured through the centuries, preserving its ramparts, towers, and moats. Restored and developed as a cultural venue, the castle now hosts exhibitions, shows, and events throughout the year, with the medieval festival being the highlight.
The medieval festival transforms the castle and its surroundings into a true medieval camp. Historical reenactment groups set up their camps within the fortified walls, complete with tents, banners, and period equipment. Visitors can witness knight tournaments, equestrian shows, sword and shield combat demonstrations, and performances by troubadours, jugglers, and minstrels who entertain in the castle courtyards and terraces.
Numerous participatory workshops allow visitors, young and old, to try their hand at medieval crafts: calligraphy, coin minting, weaving, pottery, and stone carving. Medieval artisans exhibit and demonstrate their skills: blacksmithing, leatherwork, heraldry, illumination. Old wooden games — skittles, archery, stilts — entertain families in a joyful and educational atmosphere.
In 2026, the medieval festival is evolving and taking on a new dimension under the name 'Medieval Festival of Lichtenberg Castle'. From July 3 to July 12, 2026, the castle will offer 10 days of medieval entertainment with an extended duration, new activities, in-depth historical reenactments, shows for all audiences, treasure hunts, guided tours, conferences, and craft demonstrations in a reimagined immersive atmosphere.
Lichtenberg Castle is managed by the Communauté de Communes du Pays de La Petite Pierre and offers contemporary art exhibitions, live performances, and educational workshops throughout the year. The medieval festival is part of this ambitious cultural program that makes the castle a place of life and discovery in the heart of the Northern Vosges.
