The Medieval Festival of Fréteval: A Journey Through Time in the Land of Castles
Each summer, the village of Fréteval, located between Vendôme and Châteaudun in Loir-et-Cher, hosts a grand medieval festival that brings back the era of knights, troubadours, and artisans. The event takes place in the majestic setting of the Château des Rocheux (formerly Château des Énigmes), a domain steeped in history that offers an ideal natural backdrop for this dive into the Middle Ages.
Over 100 Stands and 128 Activities
The medieval festival unfolds with an exceptionally rich program: over 100 stands of artisans, merchants, and associations, and more than 128 activities throughout the weekend. The foot combat in armor, the equestrian shows with riders in period costumes, the falconry demonstrations, and the jousts revive medieval military art before the eyes of an enthusiastic audience.
Medieval Camp and Crafts
A vast medieval camp recreates daily life in the Middle Ages: blacksmiths, tanners, weavers, potters, calligraphers, and apothecaries practice their crafts before visitors. The craft market offers leather goods, jewelry, period costumes, decorative weapons, pottery, and basketry. The medieval games for children — archery, knighting ceremonies, face painting, creative workshops — make the event a quintessential family celebration.
Music, Shows, and Evenings
Medieval musicians animate the castle grounds with bagpipes, hurdy-gurdies, drums, and flutes. Dance troupes and fire-eaters offer spectacular performances, especially in the evening. On Friday evening, a nocturnal medieval concert opens the festivities in a magical atmosphere. Pony rides and puppet shows delight the youngest attendees.
Fréteval, Land of Medieval History
Fréteval is a place steeped in medieval history. The commune has the remains of an 11th-century keep, a testament to the Battle of Fréteval in 1194, which pitted Kings Philip Augustus of France and Richard the Lionheart of England against each other. The Château des Rocheux, which hosts the festival, helps perpetuate this medieval memory through a vibrant and festive event that attracts thousands of visitors each year.
