About Ostensions Limousines

Listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 2013, the Ostensions Septennales Limousines are grandiose religious ceremonies and processions organized every seven years for the exhibition and veneration of the relics of the saints of Limousin. Ostensions Limousines — edition 2026

ℹ️ No Ostensions in 2026. The Limousin Septennial Ostensions take place every seven years: the 73rd edition was held in 2023 and the next — the 74th — is expected in 2030. Therefore, no ostension ceremony or procession is scheduled for 2026.

ℹ️ No Ostensions in 2026 — next ceremonies in 2030.

The Ostensions Septennales Limousines, recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage on December 4, 2013, are held every seven years to display and venerate the relics of the saints of Limousin. The 73rd edition brought together twenty-one participating towns across Haute-Vienne, Creuse, Charente, and Vienne from March to November 2023, spanning from the official opening on March 19 to the final closing ceremony on November 12 at the Basilique Saint-Michel-des-Lions in Limoges.

There will be no Ostensions in 2026: the seven-year cycle will resume in 2030 for the 74th edition, which the Grande Confrérie de saint Martial has announced for the spring in the Limoges diocese, including Limoges, Saint-Junien, and all participating towns. In the meantime, the relics of Saint Martial remain housed at the Basilique Saint-Michel-des-Lions in Limoges, where the Grande Confrérie de saint Martial hosts prayers to Saint Martial for the Limousin and Aquitaine regions every Wednesday at 7:15 PM.

The Limousin Ostensions: A Millennium of Fervor and Tradition

Every seven years, more than twenty towns across the Limousin region bring the relics of their founding saints out of their churches. They are carried in grand processions through the streets, accompanied by banners, flags, historical costumes, and participants dressed in period attire. This tradition was inscribed on December 4, 2013, as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Legendary Origins: The Epidemic of 994

The history of the Ostensions dates back to November 11, 994, when the Limousin was struck by an epidemic of St. Anthony's Fire (ergotism), a poisoning caused by consuming rye contaminated with ergot fungus. Faced with the population's suffering, Bishop Hilduin and Duke William the Great of Aquitaine decided to gather the relics of Saint Martial, the first bishop and evangelist of the Limousin, to expose them for the veneration of the faithful. Chronicles of the time report over seven thousand healings and the end of the epidemic on December 4, when the body of Saint Martial was returned to his tomb.

The Seven-Year Cycle and Participating Towns

The Ostensions adopted their seven-year cycle in 1512, as the number seven is considered sacred. The processions take place from April to November in the main towns of Haute-Vienne: Limoges, Saint-Junien, Le Dorat, Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat, Rochechouart, Eymoutiers, Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche, Aixe-sur-Vienne, Nexon, Aureil, Chaptelat, Saint-Victurnien, Javerdat, and Saint-Just-le-Martel, as well as in several towns in the Creuse, Charente, and Vienne departments.

Relics and Confraternities

The Ostensions honor the relics of many Limousin saints: Saint Martial, Saint Valerie, Saint Aurelian, Saint Leonard, Saint Loup, Saints Israel and Theobald in Le Dorat, Saints Cosmas and Damian, Saint Lucina, and many others. Fifteen confraternities, bringing together about seven hundred members, organize the ceremonies in coordination with the clergy and local ostension committees. These groups pass down the artisanal, musical, and liturgical skills required for the processions, which begin preparations a year in advance.

The 73rd Ostensions of 2023 and the Future

The 73rd Ostensions took place from March to November 2023 across twenty-one towns in Haute-Vienne, Creuse, Charente, and Vienne, drawing tens of thousands of spectators. The official opening was held on March 19. In Limoges, the grand procession on April 15 and 16 gathered crowds around the shrines of Saint Martial and Saint Valerie; Le Dorat celebrated on June 4, Saint-Junien on June 25, and rural ostensions continued until Guéret on October 8. The general closing ceremony was held on Sunday, November 12, at the Saint-Michel-des-Lions Basilica in Limoges. Between the seven-year cycles, commemorations, exhibitions, and cultural events keep the memory of this tradition alive. The Grand Confraternity of Saint Martial has announced the 74th Ostensions for the spring of 2030 in the Diocese of Limoges.
