Traditional winegrowers' festival in Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil
The Saint-Vincent of Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil is a traditional wine festival held annually in January to celebrate the patron saint of winegrowers. Organized by the Commanderie de la Dive Bouteille of Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, this event brings together winegrowers, wine brotherhoods, and residents for a traditional parade, a religious ceremony, inductions, and tastings of wines from the AOC Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil appellations. The rotating Saint-Vincent alternates each year between the communes of the appellation.
The Saint-Vincent de Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil is an ancestral celebration of wine tradition that takes place every year in January in this emblematic wine-growing commune in western Touraine. This event honors Saint Vincent, the patron saint of winegrowers, and symbolically marks the beginning of the vine's new cycle.
The event is organized by the Commanderie de la Dive Bouteille de Bourgueil et Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, a wine brotherhood that guards the traditions and reputation of the appellation's wines. The Commanderie plays a central role in animating the festival, presiding over the induction ceremonies of new members and the awarding of the Saint-Vincent prizes, which recognize the best wines of the year in various categories.
The day traditionally begins with a gathering of winegrowers and brotherhoods followed by a parade through the streets of the commune. A religious ceremony is held at the church, after which the festivities continue with wine tastings from the AOC Bourgueil and AOC Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil appellations. A convivial meal then brings together winegrowers, families, and guests in a warm and fraternal atmosphere.
The tradition of the rotating Saint-Vincent means the festival moves each year between the different communes of the appellation. This rotation principle allows each village in the production area to host this celebration in turn, thus strengthening the bonds between winegrowers and local communities.
The AOC Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil appellation, exclusively dedicated to red and rosé wines from cabernet franc, produces wines renowned for their finesse, fruitiness, and elegance. The Saint-Vincent is an opportunity to celebrate this unique terroir and the men and women who cultivate it with passion.
