The Théâtre en Albret Festival: open-air theater in the heart of a medieval bastide
Created in 2013 by the association Culture Vianne en Albret, the Théâtre en Albret Festival has established itself over the years as a major cultural event in Lot-et-Garonne. Each year, during the last week of July, the fortified bastide town of Vianne opens its doors for three days of live open-air performances, in the enchanting setting of the church garden, rue de l'Abbé-Louis-Bottacin.
A rich and eclectic theater program
The festival showcases theater in all its forms: classical plays, contemporary comedies, musical performances, and creations for young audiences. Invited companies come from all over France to perform in this exceptional setting. Past highlights include adaptations of Marcel Pagnol ("Marius", "César", "Fanny"), tributes to Molière, lively comedies, and musical performances.
Renowned companies
The festival regularly hosts recognized troupes such as Le Grenier de Toulouse, TEA d'Agen, the Compagnie Baudracco, and the Compagnie Les coulisses perchées. This diversity of companies guarantees a high-quality program, blending classical theater, comedy, and original creations.
A festival for the whole family
Beyond the evening shows, the Théâtre en Albret Festival offers a program of free activities each afternoon starting at 2:30 PM. Families can enjoy traditional wooden games, creative workshops, children's stories at 4 PM, and giant bubbles at 5 PM. Young audience performances are also scheduled in the afternoon, allowing the youngest to discover theater from an early age.
An exceptional setting: the bastide of Vianne
Vianne is a medieval bastide founded in the 13th century, remarkably preserved with its ramparts, fortified gates, and Romanesque church. The festival fully utilizes this unique architectural heritage by setting up its open-air stage in the church garden, offering spectators an immersive theatrical experience in a historic setting. In case of bad weather, performances are held in the Salle Jourdain de l'Isle.
Conviviality and gastronomy
Every evening of the festival, food trucks and catering stands allow spectators to eat on-site in a friendly atmosphere. The evening continues with a shared meal before the evening performances, creating a true moment of connection between festival-goers and artists.
A strong community commitment
Supported by the association Culture Vianne en Albret, chaired by Sophie Didier, the festival is part of a broader cultural initiative. Throughout the year, the association organizes concerts, exhibitions, shows, and workshops, contributing to the cultural vitality of this rural area of Lot-et-Garonne and promoting local artistic creation and community connection.
