Théâtre sur l'Herbe: a popular festival in the heart of a park

Since 2003, the Théâtre sur l'Herbe festival has been held in the magnificent Parc du Château de l'Étang in Saran, near Orléans. Supported by the Théâtre de la Tête Noire, a national stage recognized for art and creation, in partnership with the City of Saran, this triennial event has become a must-see in the cultural life of the Loiret region.

A free festival, open to all

Théâtre sur l'Herbe embodies a vision of accessible and generous performing arts. All shows are free and open access, true to the philosophy of popular, demanding, and intergenerational theater. For three days, families, the curious, and enthusiasts gather in a green setting to share unique artistic moments.

A rich and eclectic program

The festival offers a diverse program that spans disciplines: street theater, contemporary circus, dance, music, puppetry, participatory performances, artistic installations, and fire shows. Invited companies take over the park's paths, lawns, and undergrowth, creating an immersive experience where art and nature converse. Performances run from morning to evening, with offerings specially designed for young audiences and evening highlights for adults.

An eco-responsible commitment

Théâtre sur l'Herbe is a festival resolutely committed to the environment. From the stage to catering, an eco-responsible charter guides the organization: recycled materials, local and seasonal food, responsible waste management, and raising public awareness of ecological issues. The festival also explores, through its programming, the place of art in nature and our relationship with the living world.

Théâtre de la Tête Noire, the driving force behind the festival

Founded in 1985 by Patrice Douchet, Théâtre de la Tête Noire is a national stage located in Saran. For forty years, it has championed demanding and accessible contemporary creation theater, focused on new writing. Théâtre sur l'Herbe is the festive culmination of this approach: a moment of sharing and reunion between artists and the public, in a spirit of conviviality and generosity.

A highly anticipated triennial event

Held every three years, the festival is a rare and precious event in the cultural landscape of the Orléans metropolitan area. Each edition brings together several thousand spectators over three days, making the Parc du Château de l'Étang an ephemeral space for creation, encounters, and celebration. With an estimated budget of €200,000, including volunteers and municipal staff, Théâtre sur l'Herbe demonstrates remarkable collective commitment to culture for all.
