From medieval fairs to lakeside water sports, events and festivals in Normandy keep up the pace this weekend, August 8, 2026 (08/08/2026): a knights' tournament in Falaise, a historic race meeting in Deauville, and a Franco-Quebec song festival in the Eure. Twelve picks make up our list this week, from a landmark racecourse to a village stage in the Orne. Our favourite: La Vache et le Caribou in Verneuil d'Avre et d'Iton, which has been pairing French and Quebec songwriters since 2009. Beach, castle, or lake — where do you start this weekend?
Two headline picks and a one-day gathering
Falaise, birthplace of William the Conqueror, turns medieval for two days
The Falaise Medievals turn William the Conqueror's home town into a medieval camp on August 8 and 9. Below the castle, more than 120 exhibitors, jousting tournaments, street performances and costumed processions fill both days. Free to attend, it mixes family entertainment with serious historical re-enactment, one of the busiest dates on the Normandy summer calendar.
In Deauville, the century-old racecourse is in full swing
The Deauville Barrière Meeting runs at the Deauville-La Touques racecourse, opened in 1864, through August 30. Sixteen days of flat racing are packed into the month, including seven Group 1 races, the highest tier in French racing. Free family activities run alongside the races themselves.
In Rouen, Impressionism takes over the city through late September
Launched in 2010, the Festival Normandie Impressionniste returns every two to three years with exhibitions, live performances and public art installations. This edition runs until September 27 in Rouen and across the region, making it a solid choice for a Normandy afternoon on the weekend of August 8 too.
One day, or a full weekend
One day only, on the shore of Lac de Rabodanges
The Fête du Lac de Rabodanges lasts a single day, Saturday August 8, but still draws thousands of visitors to this corner of the Suisse Normande. Canoeing, paddleboarding, water-skiing and electric boats run alongside a producers' market and family entertainment all day long.
In Dives-sur-Mer, a tribute to sailors and decorated boats
The Fête de la Mer gathers the town of Dives-sur-Mer around Port Guillaume on August 8 and 9: a tribute ceremony for lost sailors, processions of decorated boats, rescue demonstrations and sea-shanty concerts. Admission is free, organised by the local sailors' heritage association.
Grestain Abbey mixes dance, theatre and sculpture
Near Honfleur, Les Trois Jours de Grestain takes over the abbey from August 7 to 9: theatre, dance, music, sculpture and visual art share the grounds and the old barn. The organising company also runs screen-printing and theatre workshops alongside the open-air shows.
Deauville closes out its chamber music residency on Saturday
Founded in 2002 by the creators of the Festival de Pâques, the Août Musical de Deauville wraps up nine days of residency on August 8 at the Salle Elie de Brignac and Les Franciscaines. Rising stars of the European music scene mentor promising young performers, from baroque to twentieth-century repertoire.
In the Cotentin, a week of concerts led by pianist Frédéric Lagarde
La Hague en Musiques runs through August 12 between Les Pieux, Flamanville and Beaumont-Hague. Since 2012, pianist Frédéric Lagarde has gathered international artists and rising talents for a week of concerts ranging from classical to flamenco, with the weekend of August 8–9 right in the middle of it.
