From the Tarasque to the Villa Noailles: Provence's big festival weekend of June 27-28

The Tarasque festival in Tarascon, Design Parade in Hyères, La Crème Festival in Villefranche: eleven very real events for the weekend of June 27-28 in Provence.

The weekend of June 27-28, 2026 marks Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur's full plunge into festival season. Between UNESCO-listed traditional fairs, international design, contemporary music by the sea and village feasts flavoured with cherries, all six departments come alive at once. This week our heart goes to the two great heritage festivals that parade hundreds of costumed figures: the Tarasque in Tarascon and the Vauban citadel of Briançon. Here are eleven outings, from the Riviera coast to the Alpine valleys, to shape your weekend at your own pace.

A weekend between centuries-old traditions and contemporary creation

The strength of this weekend lies in its sheer range: on one side, festivals born centuries ago, with processions, legendary creatures and historical re-enactments; on the other, one of Europe's sharpest design festivals and electro stages facing the Mediterranean. Most of it is free and open-air, making the most of late June's long evenings. Whether you're on the coast or in the hinterland, there's enough to fill two days without ever repeating yourself.

Fêtes de la Tarasque, Tarascon: the legendary creature parades through the streets

This is one of the high points of Provence's heritage summer. In Tarascon, in the Bouches-du-Rhône, the Fêtes de la Tarasque run from June 26 to 29 and have been listed since 2005 as part of UNESCO's oral and intangible heritage of humanity. The Tarasque, a legendary creature half-dragon half-tortoise tamed by Saint Martha, roams the streets among nearly 800 costumed figures in medieval dress. Historical re-enactments, combats, parades and popular festivities animate the old centre all weekend. A rare piece of living spectacle, deeply rooted in Tarascon's identity, to be enjoyed Saturday and Sunday alike.

Design Parade Hyères: the international design event at the Villa Noailles

Off to the Var for the weekend's great creative event. Organised by the Villa Noailles, an art centre of national interest, Design Parade Hyères takes place from June 25 to 28 and brings together two major competitions: the International Object Design Festival, in its 20th edition in 2026, and the International Interior Architecture Festival. Exhibitions, award-winning young creators and scenographies fill the modernist villa perched above Hyères. For anyone after something other than a concert this weekend, it's the ideal gateway to contemporary creation, in one of the region's most emblematic works of architecture.

La Crème Festival, Villefranche-sur-Mer: three electro nights at the water's edge

On the most beautiful bay on the French Riviera, La Crème Festival returns from June 26 to 28 in Villefranche-sur-Mer, between the Saint-Elme Citadel and the Marinières beach. A boutique festival founded in 2021, it boasts five consecutive sold-out editions and offers three days and three nights of indie electro-pop, dance and partying by the water. Sharp line-up, a controlled capacity and an exceptional seafront setting: it's the most sought-after musical event of the weekend in the Alpes-Maritimes. Ideal for those who want to party in a postcard setting, a stone's throw from Nice.

Fête Médiévale de Briançon: the Vauban citadel travels back in time

Head to the Hautes-Alpes and the highest town in France. Created in 2005, the Fête Médiévale de Briançon runs from June 26 to 28 in the Vauban Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage site. For three days, the ramparts turn into a medieval town with a craft market, jousting tournaments, encampments, street performances, a tavern and historical re-enactments. Entirely free, the event draws a wide crowd each year within its listed fortifications. It's the pick for anyone heading up to the Alps this weekend: a dive into the Middle Ages at 1,300 metres above sea level.

MOKO Festival, Toulon: free electro-rock on the Mitre peninsula

Back to the Var coast with Toulon's great free gathering. Heir to the legendary Rockorama, the MOKO Festival takes over the Tour Royale and the Mitre peninsula from June 25 to 27, turning them into a giant seaside stage. Three days of free concerts blend electro, rock, hip-hop and contemporary music, gathering thousands of festival-goers in one of the bay's most spectacular settings. Saturday June 27 closes this edition. To enjoy contemporary music without spending a euro, in a relaxed atmosphere facing the Mediterranean, this is the weekend's address in the Var.

Arts et Festins du Monde, Gardanne: gastronomy and street arts from around the globe

In the heart of the Aix country, Gardanne hosts its flagship festival on June 26 and 27. Created in 2000, Arts et Festins du Monde gathers some fifty craftspeople, around forty restaurateurs offering international specialities, and music, dance and street-arts shows from four continents. The town centre turns into a world village to wander through between two tastings. Festive, gourmet and family-friendly, it's the event that best combines flavours and spectacle this weekend in the Bouches-du-Rhône. Saturday June 27 is the big day not to miss.

Les Baux Pianos, Les Baux-de-Provence: jazz in the Alpilles

A change of mood in one of France's most beautiful villages. Created by pianist and composer André Manoukian, Les Baux Pianos takes place on June 27 and 28 at the Carrières des Lumières and in the hilltop village of the Alpilles. The eclectic programme blends jazz, world music and pop in an exceptional setting, between golden stone and views over the vineyards. For lovers of refined music and beautiful scenery, this weekend offers two outstanding evenings, far from the coastal crowds. A melodic interlude at the top of the Alpilles, to be savoured without restraint.

Festival Beleza!, Digne-les-Bains: tales and world music by the lake

In the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, the Festival Beleza! takes over the Férréols lake in Digne-les-Bains on June 26 and 27. Organised by the Maracâ association and created in 2023, this festival of storytelling and world music offers a festive, family-friendly weekend by the water: storytelling shows, concerts with Afro-Latin rhythms and collective dancing in a natural setting. Convivial and intimate, it's the weekend's hidden gem for those after a human-scale celebration, far from the coastal bustle. Saturday June 27 is the final day of this edition, the chance for an open-air evening under the Digne stars.

Festin de la Saint-Pierre, Villefranche-sur-Mer: the fishermen's feast in Cocteau's honour

Back to the Riviera for an ancestral maritime tradition. The Festin de la Saint-Pierre is celebrated on June 27 and 28 in Villefranche-sur-Mer, in honour of Saint Peter, patron of fishermen. The feast blends a religious ceremony, a procession at sea, flower wreaths cast into the bay's waters and popular festivities on the Darse harbour. The mass is held at the Saint-Pierre chapel, decorated by Jean Cocteau, which adds a unique artistic dimension to the celebration. For lovers of authentic seaside festivals, this Sunday offers a rare moment between devotion and heritage.

Fête du Terroir et de la Cerise, Malemort-du-Comtat: a thoroughly Provençal day

We end in the Vaucluse, at the foot of Mont Ventoux. On Sunday June 28, the hilltop village of Malemort-du-Comtat celebrates the local cherry and the flavours of its terroir with a great festive, popular day. Organised by the C.A.L.V.I.A.S association with the town, the tourist office and local producers, the festival honours the king fruit of the Comtat Venaissin in the heart of the Mont Ventoux regional park. A producers' market, entertainment and village conviviality: it's the ideal Sunday outing for those who want to taste authentic Provence, away from the tourist trail.
