By Christophe Contard — Éditeur web indépendant

From the Fête de la Musique in Dijon to the Royal Saltworks gardens at Arc-et-Senans and the Bargemen's Pardon on the Saône, eleven outings to celebrate the first day of summer.

What's on in Burgundy-Franche-Comté on the weekend of June 20 and 21? The solstice falls just right: on Sunday the 21st, the Fête de la Musique turns every town into an open-air stage, from Dijon to Besançon. But our pick goes to an underrated UNESCO site, the Royal Saltworks Garden Festival at Arc-et-Senans, unveiling its nine ephemeral gardens. Between the Midsummer bonfires by the Yonne, the Bargemen's Pardon on the Saône and the snails of the Haut-Doubs, this weekend blends music, river traditions and local flavour. Eleven events to enjoy under the June sun.

Fête de la Musique in Dijon (21): the whole historic centre in concert

On Sunday June 21, Dijon celebrates the Fête de la Musique across its entire historic centre. From Place de la Libération to the courtyards of the Ducal Palace, every square and garden becomes an open stage. Run by the city, the day is entirely free and blends every style: French chanson, metal, jazz, electro, rap and traditional music answer each other from one district to the next. It's the perfect chance to wander the Burgundian capital following the sounds, between two terraces, late into the solstice night. A unifying event that brings amateur musicians and seasoned artists together under the same summer sky.

Royal Saltworks Garden Festival in Arc-et-Senans (25): nine ephemeral gardens beneath Ledoux's arches

The Festival des Jardins de la Saline Royale continues all weekend, through October 18, inside Claude-Nicolas Ledoux's monument, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Since 2001, this garden showcase, unique in Europe, has seen nine 400 m² gardens created by landscape students from France, Belgium and Switzerland, under head gardener Denis Duquet. In June, the compositions are still fresh, before the full exuberance of summer. Pair it with the saltworks' semicircular architecture, whose 18th-century ideal-city design is worth the trip on its own, in a peaceful setting far from the crowds of the big summer festivals.

Festival Musique & Vin au Clos Vougeot in Vougeot (21): great performers and grand crus

The Festival Musique & Vin au Clos Vougeot opens its season on Saturday June 20 and runs through the 28th, at the Château du Clos de Vougeot and across the heritage sites of the Côte-d'Or. Founded in 2009, this classical music festival gathers internationally renowned soloists in a 12th-century setting, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits vineyards. Its signature: a rare fusion of top-flight performers and Burgundian winemakers, with each concert often followed by a tasting of grand crus. A perfect opening weekend for music lovers who like to pair musical emotion with the pleasures of wine, in one of the great wine-heritage sites listed by UNESCO.

Bargemen's Pardon in Saint-Jean-de-Losne (21): the Saône celebrates for a weekend

On Saturday June 20 and Sunday June 21, the Pardon des Mariniers brings Saint-Jean-de-Losne to life, France's foremost inland marina. This traditional festival, held every third weekend of June, keeps alive a centuries-old custom: the blessing of the boats, a solemn mass said aboard a barge, a parade of dressed-up vessels and nautical displays follow one another along the Saône quays. It's a living immersion in Burgundy's boatmen's culture, somewhere between popular fervour and a river pageant. Families, boaters and the curious mingle in a friendly atmosphere along the water. A rare tradition well worth the detour for anyone keen to grasp the river soul of the region.

Fête de la Saint-Jean in Joigny (89): the great solstice bonfire by the Yonne

Around June 20 and 21, Joigny keeps alive one of the Yonne's oldest popular festivals with the Fête de la Saint-Jean. By the river, the traditional bonfire blazes at nightfall, surrounded by music, dancing and activities for young and old. This celebration of the summer solstice, rooted in local memory, unfolds between the medieval town and the banks of the Yonne. It's a warm, family-friendly gathering that weds heritage, conviviality and the magic of fire under the stars. The ideal moment to discover this pretty Burgundian town at its best, in an atmosphere the locals have kept alive for generations.

Fête de la Musique in Besançon (25): the Comtois capital as an open stage

On Sunday June 21, Besançon celebrates the Fête de la Musique throughout its historic centre. Bands, amateur musicians, music schools and local shopkeepers bring the streets, squares and quays of the Boucle to life for free. Run by the city, the day is entirely free and open to every kind of music-making, from choirs to DJ sets. It's a chance to rediscover Vauban's UNESCO-listed city to the rhythm of concerts running late into the night. Between the Citadel and the banks of the Doubs, the first evening of summer takes on the air of a collective celebration, in a heritage setting that lifts every note.

Les 24h du Temps in Besançon (25): watchmaking celebrated at the Palais Granvelle

On Saturday June 20 and Sunday June 21, Les 24h du Temps take over the Palais Granvelle and the Musée du Temps, in Besançon, the historic capital of French watchmaking. Created in 2014, this event, unique in France, gathers around sixty players from the watchmaking world: brands, independent makers, students and trainers come to share their passion for the measurement of time. Demonstrations, workshops, encounters and exhibitions fill these two days in a Renaissance setting. It's a specialist yet accessible event that will delight fans of fine mechanics as well as the simply curious eager to understand this exceptional craft. A fascinating dive into an industrial and artisanal heritage that is the pride of Greater Besançon.

Snail Festival in La Rivière-Drugeon (25): the foodie gathering of the Haut-Doubs

From Friday June 19 to Sunday June 21, the Fête des Escargots animates the village of La Rivière-Drugeon, faithful to a tradition born in 1978. Organised by the Le Foyer association, this popular fête draws thousands of visitors around tastings of snails from the local Romanzini farm. Over three days, the village fills with concerts, dances and bouncy castles for children, in the easy-going mood typical of the Haut-Doubs. It's a rural, foodie gem, perfect for a family Sunday off the beaten track. The Comtois terroir is savoured here without fuss, between village conviviality and a regional speciality not to be missed.

Festival Zik en Terre in Baume-les-Dames (25): an eco-festival by the Cusancin

On Saturday June 20, Zik en Terre sets up its free stage on the Pipes Ropp site, by the Cusancin, in Baume-les-Dames. Run by the Gaïa Rencontres et Cultures association, this eco-festival blends jazz concerts, world music and hands-on workshops in an outstanding natural setting. Its trademark: a strong ecological commitment, from composting to waste sorting, turning restraint into a celebration in its own right. It's a green, musical interlude ideal for fans of human-scale festivals mindful of their footprint. Free entry, a relaxed mood and environmental awareness make this gathering a true gem of the Doubs.

Festival En Quêt'd'Ailleurs in Quetigny (21): world cultures in the open air

The Festival En Quêt'd'Ailleurs closes on Sunday June 21 on the Terrain Mendès-France, in Quetigny, in the Dijon area. This free celebration of world music and cultures gathers concerts, street shows, workshops and activities that spotlight the diversity of sounds from here and far away. Convivial and family-friendly, the event takes place outdoors on the town's green spaces. The final day often concentrates the highlights, in a warm, blended atmosphere. It's a lovely alternative to the big urban stages, to be discovered at the gates of Dijon for a journey without leaving the Côte-d'Or, for one sunlit Sunday.

Tous en Scène! in Montbard (21): living arts open the summer

The Tous en Scène! festival launches its ten days from Friday June 19, in the centre of Montbard, in the Côte-d'Or. Students and teachers of the inter-communal conservatoire, joined by their artistic partners, offer around ten free shows blending theatre, dance, brass bands, accordion, percussion and contemporary music. The opening weekend sets the tone for this popular fête that takes over the streets and squares of Buffon's town.
