River and nautical tradition in Saint-Jean-de-Losne, France's leading river port
The Pardon des Mariniers is a traditional river festival organized every year on the third weekend of June in Saint-Jean-de-Losne, France's leading pleasure craft river port, in Côte-d'Or. This celebration perpetuates the centuries-old tradition of the mariners' pardon with the blessing of boats, a solemn mass celebrated on a barge, a parade of decorated boats, nautical demonstrations, a pyrotechnic show, and musical entertainment along the Saône.
Located at the confluence of the Saône and the Burgundy and Rhône to Rhine canals, Saint-Jean-de-Losne is the largest pleasure craft river port in France and Europe. Mariners have celebrated their pardon since 1960, and the Port of Saint-Jean-de-Losne revived this tradition starting in 1970. The Pardon des Mariniers pays tribute to the mariner community and the river tradition of this historic town.
On Sunday morning, a solemn mass is celebrated on a barge moored on the Saône, followed by the blessing of the boats by the priest. The river procession of decorated boats then sails up the Saône in a colorful and moving spectacle. Nautical demonstrations — lock maneuvers, regattas, and on-water activities — punctuate the Sunday program.
Saturday is dedicated to popular festivities: nautical demonstrations, country dancing, street jazz, and concerts liven up the quays throughout the day. The evening concludes with a fireworks display launched from the banks of the Saône, illuminating the boats and the port in a magical show. On Sunday, after the mass and blessing, the festivities continue with a funfair and concerts.
The 2026 Pardon des Mariniers is scheduled for June 20 and 21 in Saint-Jean-de-Losne. Blessing of boats, mass on a barge, nautical demonstrations, concerts, and fireworks are on the program.
