Piano, roses and Prix de Diane: ten things to do in Northern France on 13-14 June

By Christophe Contard — Éditeur web indépendant

From the Lille Piano(s) Festival celebrating the piano in all its forms at the Nouveau Siècle to the prestigious Prix de Diane horse race at Chantilly, ten outings for a June weekend of music, photography and tradition across Northern France.

This weekend of June 13-14, Northern France offers a striking panorama of its cultural diversity. In Lille, the piano reigns across three simultaneous stages at the Nouveau Siècle and the city's heritage venues. In Chantilly, Sunday revolves around green turf and extravagant hats at the Prix de Diane. In between, world music in Saint-Quentin, punk in the Aisne and international photography in Lille take their final bows. Our pick of the weekend is the Festival Jean de La Fontaine, playing its very last concert on Saturday June 13 across the heritage sites of southern Aisne — a rare, understated and remarkably well-crafted event that deserves far more attention than it has been getting since 1991.

Lille Piano(s) Festival (59): three days to explore the piano in every direction

The standout event of the weekend in the region is undoubtedly the Lille Piano(s) Festival, hosted by the Orchestre National de Lille at the Nouveau Siècle from June 12 to 14. Since 2004, this festival has devoted three intense days to the piano in all its dimensions: classical with international soloists, jazz, electroacoustic and family shows. Around forty concerts fill the Nouveau Siècle, Notre-Dame de la Treille Cathedral, the Palais des Beaux-Arts and other landmark venues in the metropolitan area. Saturday and Sunday concentrate the main formations and headline acts. Several events are free or reduced-price, making the edition genuinely accessible to all. A dense, generous festival that makes classical music welcoming without ever sacrificing artistic rigour.

Transphotographiques in Lille (59): last weekend for the metropolitan photography landmark

The Transphotographiques close their doors on Sunday June 14, ending five weeks of exhibitions across the major heritage venues of the Lille metropolitan area. This is the final weekend to visit this international photography selection, curated by the Maison de la Photographie since 2001. Exhibitions speak to each other across the Tri Postal, Palais Rameau, Maisons Folies, Vieille Bourse and Palais Rihour. Documentary gazes sit alongside plastic arts approaches in a programme that holds a coherent editorial line from one edition to the next. Admission is free at most venues. Allow two to three hours for the full trail, and consider combining it with the Lille Piano(s) Festival for a packed day in Lille.

Festival Jean de La Fontaine in Château-Thierry (02): last concert Saturday before the closing

Founded in 1991, the Festival Jean de La Fontaine plays its very last concert on Saturday June 13 in Château-Thierry, the birthplace of the fabulist. This is the finale of a cross-disciplinary festival blending vocal and instrumental music, theatre, dance and literary talks for over thirty years. The venues match the ambition: the Jean de La Fontaine museum, the medieval castle, churches and abbeys of southern Aisne. The programme brings the fabulist's work to life as much as it satisfies music lovers. Small capacities in heritage spaces, accessible prices, a hushed atmosphere far from the big metropolitan halls. A closing concert in settings like these is often the edition at its best. Book early — last-night seats go fast.

Journées de la Rose at the Domaine de Chaalis (60): 130 exhibitors in an Oise abbey

The Journées de la Rose at the Domaine de Chaalis take place from June 12 to 14 in the grounds of the former royal abbey of Chaalis at Fontaine-Chaalis, in the Oise. Since 2001, this major horticultural event has brought together around 130 exhibitors every second weekend of June — rose growers, nurserymen, landscape designers and craftspeople. The rose garden, classed as a Jardin Remarquable, is in full bloom at this time of year. Under the patronage of the Société Nationale d'Horticulture de France, enthusiasts find varieties unavailable at garden centres. Demonstrations, talks and guided tours of the estate round out the programme. The abbey and its park make an exceptional setting, even for those coming simply for a walk. A discreet but quality event, perfect for combining horticultural passion with heritage discovery.

Prix de Diane Longines in Chantilly (60): 30,000 spectators, 2,100 metres of turf and hats

The Prix de Diane Longines is one of France's most prestigious equestrian events, held on Sunday June 14 at the Chantilly racecourse. This mythical race for three-year-old fillies over 2,100 metres draws more than 30,000 visitors each year to an atmosphere combining sport, elegance and festivity. The day goes well beyond the race itself: an animated village, concerts, a champagne bar and the famous hat competition draw as much attention as the sporting stakes. The Chantilly estate, with its castle and the Grandes Écuries, provides a majestic backdrop. The racecourse is a few minutes' walk from the château. For first-timers at the races, the Prix de Diane is a perfect entry point — festive, accessible and photogenic. A smart outfit is advised; the atmosphere calls for it.

URBX Festival in Roubaix (59): urban cultures on the Grand Place

Launched in 2022, URBX is the urban cultures festival of the Lille metropolitan area, filling Roubaix's Grand Place from June 11 to 21. Over ten days, dance, music, street art, fashion and sport take over the city's distinctive venues. With 300 invited artists and 30,000 participants expected across the entire edition, the festival has established itself in just a few years as one of the most unifying events in northern France's young urban scene. The June 13-14 weekend concentrates several highlights, including a major free concert on the Grand Place. The energy is different from that of classical festivals — more spontaneous, more mixed, more grounded in the aesthetics of today.

Minuit avant la Nuit in Amiens (80): four days of free concerts in Parc Saint-Pierre

Minuit avant la Nuit takes over Parc Saint-Pierre and the Amiens hortillonnages from June 11 to 14 for four days of entirely free concerts. Organised since 2018 by La Lune des Pirates, this festival attracts tens of thousands of spectators each year to a green setting just minutes from the city centre. The programme mixes French chanson, electronica, pop, rock and world music, with particular attention to emerging artists. Saturday and Sunday are generally the busiest days, with headline acts in the evening. Total free admission, the park setting and the stylistic diversity make this festival an ideal outing for anyone wanting to enjoy the summer without a specific budget. A genuine Amiens landmark built in under ten years.

Festival Escales du Monde in Saint-Quentin (02): world music and dance on Saturday-Sunday

The Festival Escales du Monde puts down anchor in Saint-Quentin on June 13 and 14 for a weekend of world music and world cultures. This cross-disciplinary event celebrates cultural diversity through concerts of African, Latin and world music, dance performances, discovery workshops and activities for all ages. The format weaves together musical stages, dance performances and food areas in a single site. It is an accessible festival, open to all ages, giving pride of place to artists from different continents. Saint-Quentin — often overlooked despite its remarkable historic centre — offers a surprising setting for this kind of event. A good excuse to discover the city and its impressive Hôtel de Ville square.

Festival Berzyk in Berzy-le-Sec (02): punk, ska and rock in a village on Saturday

The gem of this weekend is the Festival Berzyk, held on Saturday June 13 in Berzy-le-Sec, an Aisne village of barely 500 inhabitants. Born in 2010 from a project between the municipal team and a group of passionate friends, the Berzyk offers an eclectic programme dominated by punk, ska and rock, open to reggae, hip-hop and jazz every second weekend of June. Over fifteen years it has become one of the warmest events of its kind in northern France. The village-fête atmosphere rivals bigger festivals for conviviality, accessibility and reasonable prices. For fans of alternative music looking for a human-scale festival far from the formatted big stages, Berzyk is an address worth remembering.

Amiens Comics Festival (80): exhibitions and signings until 21 June

The Amiens Comics Festival continues at the Halle Freyssinet until June 21. The festival, run since 1996 by the On a Marché sur la Bulle association, hosts hundreds of authors for signing sessions, exhibitions and talks around the ninth art. Free and open to all, it is one of the oldest comics events in northern France. The June 13-14 weekend falls in the middle of the festival, with a typically strong programme of signing sessions. Combine it with a stop at Minuit avant la Nuit in Parc Saint-Pierre for a full Amiens day between music and comics.

Worth a mention too

  • Artpenteurs (59): a contemporary art and land art trail in open country across French Flanders, between Steenvoorde and Bailleul — a cycling or walking outing for those curious about outdoor art.
  • Guitares en Picardie (02): free, itinerant concerts around classical, flamenco and jazz guitar in the churches and village halls of the Aisne until June 20.
  • Les Rencontres Musicales de Cambrai (59): chamber music and symphonic concerts in the art deco theatre and heritage venues of the Cambrésis until July 5.
