The Brittany Book Festival in Carhaix

Founded in 1990 in Carhaix-Plouguer, the Festival du Livre en Bretagne is the largest literary fair in the region. Nearly 300 authors and about a hundred publishers fill the Espace Glenmor from 10/24/2026, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on both days. Entry is free.

Several literary prizes are awarded there, including the Prix du roman, the Prix du livre d'histoire de Bretagne, the Prix Xavier de Langlais and the Prix de la nouvelle en breton.

Each year, a minority people or culture is invited. Kabylia, Wales, Scotland, Catalonia, the Basque Country and Corsica have all been guests of honour over the editions, echoing Brittany's own linguistic struggles.

Author signings, round tables, public readings, activities for young people and fest-noz are also on the bill. The Ti ar Vro association runs it all with a team of volunteers. Free parking is available nearby.

Art, wine and video games

Art Basel Paris fills the glass roof of the Grand Palais through Sunday, October 25, with more than 200 international galleries and a day ticket at 47 euros. On the Île de Ré, Ré-Majeure gathers young virtuoso musicians around conductor Marc Minkowski, with morning « concertôt(s) ». In Angers, the International Bicycle Travel Festival screens films shot by the cyclists themselves at the Centre des Congrès, and opens a swap space for gear.

About sixty estates from Côte-d'Or, Saône-et-Loire, the Yonne and the Jura pour their wines at the Salon des Vignerons Indépendants de Dijon, at the price charged at the estate; entry costs 6 euros. In the Cher, at the gates of Sancerre, the Foire aux Vins de France de Saint-Satur presents more than 50 appellations on Saturday and Sunday, with free entry.

The gyms of Mouans-Sartoux host the RE-PLAY Festival, devoted to retro gaming and pop culture from the 1970s to 2000, with consoles and arcade cabinets open to play. At the Cognelot fort, the Fête des Sorcières de Chalindrey holds its 28th edition: about sixty exhibitors at the Halloween market, face-painting and balloon-sculpting workshops, and witches' bread baked in the fort's oven. Saturday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; free under 12, 5 euros from age 12, 8 euros for the family pack.

Apple, chestnut and cider on Sunday

On Sunday, October 25, the Apple, Cider and Cheese Festival of Conches-en-Ouche lines up more than 100 exhibitors and craftspeople in the Eure, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Century-old presses run the old way, a bread oven turns out brioches and apple turnovers, and regional contests rank ciders, honeys and gingerbreads. Entry is free.

In Sauveterre-de-Rouergue, an Aveyron bastide founded in 1281, the Chestnut and Sweet Cider Festival starts at 10 a.m. Nearly a tonne of chestnuts goes on the grills, about 2,000 litres of artisan sweet cider are served, and a tripe breakfast opens the morning. Brass bands and folk groups take over, with free entry.

In the night from Saturday to Sunday, France moves to winter time: at 3 a.m., it is 2 a.m.
