Reims' multidisciplinary hip-hop festival
The Boom Bap Festival is a multidisciplinary event dedicated to hip-hop culture, organized by the association Velours in Reims. Created in 2013, the festival makes the city vibrate for over a week to the rhythm of hip-hop through five thematic axes: music, dance, visual arts, sport, and gastronomy. From dance battles to concerts, block parties, mural paintings, and the Boom Market, the festival takes over the historic and cultural sites of the city of coronations.
Created in 2013 by the association Velours, the Boom Bap Festival has established itself as a textbook example of a multidisciplinary festival in France. Far from being limited to rap concerts, the event embraces all dimensions of hip-hop culture: music, dance, visual arts, sport, and gastronomy. This global approach allows it to reach diverse audiences—young people, families, enthusiasts, and the curious—and to create bridges between the different artistic expressions of the hip-hop movement.
The dance component of the Boom Bap Festival is one of its strong points. The festival organizes battles bringing together French and European dancers specializing in hip-hop, popping, locking, and house. These competitions take place in unexpected venues, such as circus tents transformed into arenas. Block parties, neighborhood festivals open to all, complete this program with giant murals, lettering and graffiti workshops, tote bag customization, dance, and DJ sets.
The Boom Bap Festival stands out for its ability to take over the historic, cultural, and symbolic venues of Reims. La Cartonnerie, the city's contemporary music venue, hosts the festival's major concerts. The Freaked Studio, an underground space with a capacity of 250 located in abandoned docks behind La Cartonnerie, offers an atypical setting for more intimate evenings. The festival also programs events in other locations around the city, creating an urban trail through Reims.
The Boom Bap Festival's music program mixes headliners of French rap and emerging artists from the hip-hop scene. The festival has notably hosted artists such as Vald, JP Manova, Sly Johnson, and Binkbeats. The Boom Market, set up in a vacant 700 m² space, offers a vinyl, record, and vintage item exchange. Thematic evenings (beatbox, DJ sets) and a varied gastronomic offer complete the programming of this dense and eclectic festival.
