The children's festival at the heart of Saint-Loup
Bugale Breizh, literally "the children of Brittany" in the Breton language, is a day entirely dedicated to youth, held every August as part of the Festival de la Saint-Loup in Guingamp. Organized by the Kenleur confederation (formerly Kendalc'h), this event brings together the children's and teenagers' groups from the Celtic circles of the seven departmental federations of Brittany.
A gathering of a thousand children in costume
Each edition sees nearly a thousand children, in costume or not, converge on Guingamp for a day of sharing Breton culture. The young dance groups present the show they have worked on throughout the year within their Celtic circle on two simultaneous stages. The children's parade through the streets of Guingamp, particularly rue Notre-Dame, is one of the day's highlights.
Workshops, games, and children's ball
Beyond the dance performances, Bugale Breizh offers a program of various activities in the Place du Vally and the Public Garden: a gouren (Breton wrestling) tournament, embroidery and bobbin lace workshops, traditional Breton games, tug-of-war with the Saint-Loup prizes, and a grand children's ball on the Place de la Plomée. All activities are free and open to all children, whether they are members of a Celtic circle or simply visitors.
A vector for cultural transmission
Bugale Breizh plays an essential role in transmitting Breton culture to new generations. By allowing children to discover traditional dance, music, games, and costumes in a festive and friendly atmosphere, the event contributes to the vitality of Brittany's living heritage. It is part of the educational mission of the Kenleur confederation, which brings together over 150 Celtic circles and dance groups throughout historical Brittany.
