French chanson takes the scenic route in Pays Voironnais
Since 1996, the Chansons Buissonnières association has enlivened the cultural life of the Pays Voironnais in Isère by organizing French chanson concerts in the village halls and community centers of small rural communes. Driven by Jacqueline Girodet, this unique initiative introduces quality singer-songwriters to local residents, far from the usual commercial circuits. With nearly thirty seasons under its belt, Chansons Buissonnières has become a major player in the dissemination of French-language chanson in rural areas.
Since 1996, the Chansons Buissonnières association has been pursuing a unique and generous cultural project: bringing quality French chanson to the small villages of Pays Voironnais, in Isère. The "chanson buissonnière"—chanson that plays hooky, that takes the scenic route—finds its full meaning here: far from large venues and commercial circuits, artists perform in village halls, community centers, and local spaces.
The Chansons Buissonnières adventure was initiated by Jacqueline Girodet, an emblematic figure of chanson in Isère. For nearly thirty seasons, she has curated a demanding and eclectic program, introducing audiences to talented singer-songwriters who often struggle to access traditional distribution networks. Each season features several concerts spread across different communes in Pays Voironnais and its surroundings.
The strength of Chansons Buissonnières lies in its proximity to the audience. Concerts are most often held on Saturday evenings, in human-scale venues where the exchange between artists and spectators is direct and warm. This intimate format creates unique moments of sharing, where chanson is experienced as a living art form accessible to all.
The Chansons Buissonnières association champions a vision of chanson as an artisanal and independent art form. The programming favors artists who write, compose, and perform their own works, with a commitment to literary and musical quality. Renowned names from the French chanson scene have been featured over the years, alongside emerging talents discovered by the association.
In addition to the regular concert season, the association organizes special events like « Mai en chansons » (May in Chansons), a celebratory weekend bringing together several artists for concerts, meet-and-greets, and convivial moments. These events bring together a loyal audience and celebrate chanson in all its diversity.
Chansons Buissonnières is an exemplary model for cultural dissemination in rural areas. By bringing chanson to communes that do not always have access to a rich cultural offering, the association contributes to the vitality of the regions and social cohesion. Its work demonstrates that artistic quality can flourish everywhere, even in the smallest villages, thanks to the dedication of passionate volunteers.
