National choral art festival supported by the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation
Chants Libres is a national choral art festival initiated and supported by the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation. In Côtes-d'Armor, it is led by the chamber choir Mélisme(s), a professional ensemble based in Trégor. Every year in June, the festival offers concerts, participatory workshops, and musical moments in unexpected places, with the ambition of promoting choral singing to the widest audience. Created in 2020, Chants Libres brings together professional choirs, amateur choirs, and children's choirs in a spirit of sharing and discovery.
Chants Libres is a national choral art festival, initiated by the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation as part of its historic commitment to choral singing. Deployed simultaneously in several regions of France, it is led in Côtes-d'Armor by the chamber choir Mélisme(s), a professional vocal ensemble directed by Gildas Music and based in Trégor.
Brittany joined the Chants Libres adventure in 2024, alongside the Maîtrise de Sainte-Anne-d'Auray in Morbihan. In Côtes-d'Armor, Mélisme(s) offers concerts in heritage sites and unusual spaces — industrial sites, train stations, natural areas — with the aim of bringing choral music to places where it is rarely present. The programs mix classical repertoire and contemporary creation.
The originality of Chants Libres lies in the encounter between professional choirs, amateur choirs, and children's choirs. Participatory workshops, open rehearsals, and "enchanted moments" in public spaces allow the audience to discover choral singing in a spontaneous and joyful way. The festival thus creates bridges between amateur practice and professional excellence.
The 6th edition of Chants Libres is expected in June 2026 in Lannion and Trégor. The chamber choir Mélisme(s) will once again lead the festival in Côtes-d'Armor with concerts, workshops, and participatory musical moments.
