Cathar memory and solar phenomenon at Montségur Castle
Montségur, a key site of Cathar resistance, hosts two major commemorative events each year: the commemoration of the pyre on March 16th, in memory of the 225 Cathars burned on March 16th, 1244, at the foot of the pog, and the summer solstice on June 21st, during which a spectacular solar phenomenon passes through the arrow slits of the castle keep. These two events bring together historians, Occitan associations, Catharism enthusiasts, and visitors to remember one of the most tragic episodes in the medieval history of Languedoc.
On March 16, 1244, after a ten-month siege by the royal army and Inquisition forces, 225 Cathars—men and women, Perfects and believers—refused to abjure their faith and voluntarily ascended an immense pyre erected at the foot of the pog of Montségur. This tragic event marked the end of organized Cathar resistance in the South of France and remains one of the most poignant episodes in the medieval history of Languedoc. Every year, on March 16th, a commemoration ceremony is held at the Prats dels Cremats (Field of the Burned), at the foot of the memorial stele erected in 1960 in memory of the victims.
The commemoration day is divided into two main events. In the morning, starting at 10:30 AM, a ceremony takes place at the stele in the Champ des Brûlés, with tributes paid to the 225 victims of the pyre. Representatives of Occitan associations, cultural movements, and regionalist parties—including the Parti de la Nation Occitane and Occitania e Libertat—speak to recall the memory of the Cathars and defend Occitan culture. In the afternoon, themed conferences are offered at the Montségur municipal hall, led by historians and specialists in Catharism.
Every June 21st, the day of the summer solstice, a spectacular solar phenomenon occurs at Montségur Castle. The first rays of the rising sun pass through the four arrow slits of the keep in the northwest with remarkable precision, illuminating the opposite embrasures with a golden light and appearing to cut the castle in two. This phenomenon, studied by astronomers and archaeologists, attests to the intentional orientation of the fortress according to the sun, in a tradition common to medieval builders. The pog of Montségur fills with a diverse crowd on this day: the curious, astronomy enthusiasts, followers of various spiritualities, and visitors who come to witness this unique natural spectacle.
Beyond the two emblematic dates of March 16th and June 21st, the castle of Montségur is a permanent place of memory, classified as a Historic Monument, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year. Perched at an altitude of 1,207 meters on its vertiginous pog, the castle offers a grandiose panorama of the Ariège Pyrenees and the Pays d'Olmes plain. The village's archaeological museum complements the visit by presenting objects found during excavations: ceramics, coins, religious artifacts, and remnants of the daily lives of the besieged.
Commemoration of the 782nd anniversary of the Montségur pyre on March 16, 2026, and summer solstice on June 21, 2026. Ceremonies at Prats dels Cremats, conferences on Catharism, and observation of the solar phenomenon at the castle.
March 16, 2026 will mark the 782nd anniversary of the Montségur pyre. The commemoration ceremony will be held at Prats dels Cremats starting at 10:30 AM, with the traditional tributes at the stele in memory of the 225 Cathars burned on March 16, 1244. On June 21, 2026, the day of the summer solstice, the solar phenomenon can be observed at sunrise at Montségur Castle: the sun's rays will pass through the keep's arrow slits with remarkable precision, illuminating the fortress with a golden light.
