The slowest festival in the world on the Canal du Midi
Convivencia is a traveling world music festival that sails every summer on the Canal du Midi aboard a 30-meter barge, "Le Tourmente". For three weeks in July, the barge-stage travels up the canal at 5 km/h and stops in about fifteen towns in Occitanie, including Montech and Grisolles in Tarn-et-Garonne. Free concerts every evening on the banks, in a guinguette atmosphere mixing world music, local gastronomy, and river heritage.
Convivencia is much more than a music festival: it's a journey. Since its creation, the Occitan cultural association has organized a unique musical crossing every summer on the Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage masterpiece. Aboard a 30-meter barge named Le Tourmente, a floating stage slowly travels up the canal at 5 km/h, stopping in about fifteen towns to offer free concerts to residents and visitors.
For three weeks in July, the banks of the Canal du Midi transform into festive and friendly guinguette stages. Every evening, in a new town, Convivencia hosts one or more world music artists for completely free open-air concerts. Africa, the Americas, the Mediterranean basin, Eastern Europe, Arab-Andalusian music, and Occitan traditions blend along the water in an eclectic and demanding program.
In the past, the festival has hosted internationally renowned artists such as Fatoumata Diawara, the Taraf de Haidouks, as well as flamenco, gypsy jazz, and traditional Occitan music groups. The programming emphasizes cultural diversity, encounters, and dialogue between world music.
Convivencia's crossing passes through the department of Tarn-et-Garonne every year, with notable stops in Montech (82700), famous for its water slope and lock, and in Grisolles (82170). In Montech, the barge moors near the water slope, an exceptional and unique hydraulic structure in France, offering a magical setting for an evening concert by the canal.
These two towns in the 82 department are part of a route covering some 400 km between Toulouse and the Mediterranean, or vice versa, crossing the departments of Haute-Garonne, Tarn-et-Garonne, Hérault, and Aude.
Convivencia upholds strong values: cultural accessibility, eco-responsibility, and support for independent artists. Labeled Label et la Fête since 2021 for its event safety approach, the festival offers vegetarian and local catering, minimizes plastic waste, and promotes soft mobility along the canal banks.
Beyond the concerts, Radio Convivencia broadcasts shows every evening from the riverbanks, recorded live with local reporters, musicians, and residents. Writing workshops, contemporary art exhibitions, and heritage walks complete the daytime program.
What sets Convivencia apart from all other festivals is its pace and philosophy. Here, there are no gigantic stages or crowds of thousands of people: the festival arrives gently in each village, sets up for an evening, creates a moment of encounter and sharing, and then continues its journey the next morning. It is this deliberate slowness, this human connection to celebration and culture, that earns it its reputation as the "slowest festival in the world".
Each host town experiences a unique evening: local volunteers, associations, shopkeepers, and residents mobilize to make the stop a contemporary village festival open to the world.
2026 edition of Convivencia: three weeks of free world music concerts on the Canal du Midi, with an expected stop in Montech (82700) and Grisolles (82170) in Tarn-et-Garonne.
The Convivencia festival returns in July 2026 for a new musical crossing of the Canal du Midi aboard its barge Le Tourmente. True to its mission as a free traveling festival, Convivencia will once again offer about fifteen stops in the riverside towns of Occitanie, including one in Montech in Tarn-et-Garonne.
World music concerts every evening on the banks, Radio Convivencia activities, local catering, and a friendly atmosphere are on the program for this edition, the details of which will be announced on the official website convivencia.eu in spring 2026. Admission will remain completely free for all concerts, in line with the festival's philosophy of cultural accessibility.
Montech is located 15 km northwest of Montauban (82000) and 40 km from Toulouse. The town is crossed by the Canal du Midi and its famous water slope.
Concerts take place on the banks of the Canal du Midi, near the Montech water slope. Access is completely free, no reservation required. It is advisable to bring a folding chair or a mat, and light clothing for summer evenings.
Vegetarian and local product food stalls are set up on the banks during the evenings. Drinks and regional specialties available on site.
The traveling festival changes town every evening. Consult the detailed program on the official website to know the exact dates of the Montech and Grisolles stops for the desired edition.
