Grand agricultural and local produce festival organized by Young Farmers
The Festival de la Terre is the flagship event of the Young Farmers of Île-de-France. Created in the 1950s, this major agricultural and festive gathering is held annually in September in a rural town in the region. In 2024, Sonchamp, the leading agricultural town in the Yvelines, hosted the 69th edition of this popular festival. For a weekend, the public discovers the agricultural world through sheepdog demonstrations, an educational farm, tastings of local products, motocross, helicopter rides, inflatable games, and pony rides. The festival celebrates the professions of the land and promotes short supply chains and local producers from Île-de-France.
For over seven decades, the Festival de la Terre has brought together thousands of visitors each autumn around a common passion: agriculture and local produce. Organized by the Île-de-France Young Farmers' Union, this traveling event sets up camp each year in a different rural town in the region, transforming farmland into a huge popular festival for a weekend.
The Festival de la Terre is much more than just an agricultural fair. It is a convivial, festive, family-friendly, and institutional event, designed to bring the general public closer to the farming world and showcase the expertise of farmers in Île-de-France.
In 2024, the town of Sonchamp, in the Yvelines, had the honor of hosting the 69th edition of the Festival de la Terre. As the leading agricultural town in the department with its vast cereal plains, Sonchamp perfectly embodies the spirit of this event. The festival was spread across land located between Sonchamp and the neighboring town of Orcemont, near Rambouillet.
The Festival de la Terre program offers a comprehensive overview of agriculture in Île-de-France:
The Yvelines department has 807 farms and around 2,000 jobs in the sector. The Festival de la Terre highlights this often-unknown reality of a department primarily associated with Versailles and urbanization. The Department of Yvelines, a partner of the event, used the festival to reiterate its commitment to short supply chains, particularly supplying school canteens with local products: pasta from Prunay-en-Yvelines, yogurt from Rambouillet, lentils from Beynes, and beef from the Yvelines.
The Festival de la Terre is one of the oldest agricultural events in Île-de-France. Created in the 1950s by Young Farmers, it has endured through the decades while retaining its original spirit: promoting agricultural professions, defending local farming, and offering the public a moment to connect with those who feed the region.
