Festival of opera and lyric art in the ruins of the Marquis de Sade's castle
Created by couturier Pierre Cardin, the Festival de Lacoste is held every summer in the majestic ruins of the Marquis de Sade's castle, perched on the heights of the village of Lacoste in the Luberon. Operas, lyric recitals, and dance performances are presented under the stars, in a setting of stone and lavender where history and art uniquely meet. A must-see event in the Vaucluse, combining heritage, gastronomy, and artistic excellence.
Lacoste is a village of some 400 inhabitants perched on a rocky spur of the Luberon, in the Vaucluse. This medieval village, with its sloping alleys and dry stone walls overlooking vineyards and lavender fields, is home to one of the jewels of Provençal cultural heritage: the castle of the Marquis de Sade. It is in the spectacular ruins of this castle that couturier Pierre Cardin created, in the late 1990s, a lyric festival of absolute uniqueness.
Pierre Cardin (1922-2020), one of the greatest names in French haute couture, had a special connection with Provence and with Lacoste. Fascinated by the history of Donatien Alphonse François de Sade—the famous marquis who resided in this castle in the 18th century before being imprisoned for his writings—and by the romantic ruins of the building, Cardin gradually acquired properties in Lacoste around the turn of the millennium.
He partially restored the castle and installed a natural stone quarry—the inner courtyard of the ruins—capable of accommodating several hundred spectators for open-air performances. It was in this absolutely unique setting, between the collapsed walls and the broken arches of the castle, that the festival was born, offering operas and lyric performances under the Luberon stars.
The Festival de Lacoste has established itself as one of the most original and sought-after cultural events in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Every summer, in July and August, international-quality opera productions are presented in the castle ruins.
The programming favors operas from the classical repertoire—Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi, Puccini—but also less frequently performed works, new creations, and recitals by great singers. The open-air stage, backed by the castle walls, offers remarkable natural acoustics and a visual setting that no opera house in the world can match.
The performances take place at dusk, when the sun has set behind the Luberon ridges and the Provençal sky turns a deep blue, then dotted with stars. This nocturnal dimension and the magic of the place create an absolutely unforgettable operatic experience.
Lacoste has another cultural peculiarity: since 2006, the village has hosted a Provençal campus of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), a major American art school. The presence of hundreds of art and design students from around the world has transformed Lacoste into a vibrant center of artistic creation, reinforcing the cultural and international dimension of the village and its festival.
One of the most striking features of the Festival de Lacoste is the contrast between the small size of the place—400 inhabitants—and the international reach of the event. Spectators and music lovers come from Europe and around the world to attend the performances, held in an unparalleled setting.
Around the festival, village life is transformed: restaurants and art galleries are bustling until late at night, the medieval alleys fill with elegantly dressed spectators, and the special atmosphere of Lacoste—both austere and refined, melancholic and lively—reaches its summer peak.
After Pierre Cardin's passing in December 2020, the festival has continued under the auspices of his foundation and heirs, who wished to perpetuate this unique event that the couturier held so dear. The format and spirit of the festival have been maintained, continuing to offer exceptional lyric evenings every summer in the ruins of the Marquis de Sade's castle.
The Festival de Lacoste will return in July-August 2026 for new opera and lyric recital evenings in the ruins of the Marquis de Sade's castle. Perpetuating Pierre Cardin's legacy in this Luberon village, the festival will once again offer exceptional evenings combining lyric voices, orchestral music, and the magic of the Luberon under the stars.
The Festival de Lacoste returns for summer 2026 in the ruins of the Marquis de Sade's castle, in the heart of the perched village of Lacoste in the Vaucluse Luberon. Perpetuating the artistic legacy of Pierre Cardin, founder of the festival, the 2026 edition will once again offer several evenings of lyric performances—operas, recitals, concerts—in this unique setting.
The detailed program will be announced in spring 2026. Tickets will be available on the official festival website. Due to the limited capacity of the site, advance booking is strongly recommended.
For those wishing to extend the experience, the neighboring villages of the Luberon—Bonnieux, Ménerbes, Gordes, Roussillon—offer high-quality accommodation and restaurants for a complete cultural getaway in Provence.
By car: Lacoste is located 10 km from Bonnieux, 12 km from Ménerbes, 30 km from Apt, 50 km from Aix-en-Provence, and 55 km from Avignon. Access is via the D109 from the D2 (route des Luberon). The village is perched, and the alleys are narrow: parking is recommended below the village, near the town hall.
Performances are held in the evening, at dusk (generally 9:30 PM). Due to the limited capacity of the site, advance booking is essential. Tickets are available on the official festival website and by phone.
Bring warm clothing for the evenings (July and August nights can be cool in the Luberon). Access to the castle involves climbing the sloping alleys of the village. The festival takes place in the ruins: some spectators prefer to bring a cushion or a blanket.
Restaurants in Lacoste and neighboring villages (Bonnieux, Ménerbes, Gordes, Roussillon) offer dinners before the performances. Accommodation is available in the surrounding villages and in Apt.
