The oldest theatre festival in Aquitaine, in the heart of Sarlat
Created in 1952, the Festival des Jeux du Théâtre de Sarlat is the oldest theatre festival in Aquitaine and the first to be established after the Avignon Festival. For over seventy years, it has celebrated the dramatic arts in the exceptional setting of Sarlat-la-Canéda, a city classified as a "City of Art and History".
Performances take place in three legendary locations in the medieval city: Place de la Liberté, Jardin des Enfeus, and Abbaye Sainte-Claire. These open-air venues offer a unique backdrop where the golden stones of the Black Périgord serve as a natural stage for plays by Molière, Shakespeare, Marguerite Yourcenar, Guy de Maupassant, and Eugène Labiche.
The festival is known for welcoming both established artists and emerging young companies. It features a rich program combining repertoire classics and contemporary creations, with readings, meetings, and exchanges between artists and the public.
The 74th edition of the Sarlat Theatre Games Festival takes place from July 18 to August 3, 2026, in the historic center of Sarlat-la-Canéda (Dordogne). The oldest theatre festival in France after Avignon, it offers an open-air program under the sign of a carte blanche entrusted to Jean-Paul Tribout.
From July 18 to August 3, 2026, the Sarlat Theatre Games Festival returns for its 74th edition in the medieval setting of the Périgordian city. Created in 1952, it is the oldest theatre festival in France after Avignon and the first in Aquitaine.
The 2026 edition offers a rich and eclectic program: 18 shows and one reading, performed outdoors in emblematic venues of the old town (Place de la Liberté, Jardin des Enfeus, Abbaye Sainte-Claire), with a different play each evening. This edition is marked by a carte blanche entrusted to actor and director Jean-Paul Tribout.
Every morning, from July 19 to August 3 at 11 am, discussion meetings led by Jean-Paul Tribout bring together actors, authors, directors, journalists, and the public around the shows.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Sarlat-la-Canéda (24200).
Paid performances. Ticket office open 30 minutes before each performance at the venues. Reservations possible on-site, by mail, or by phone.
