Since 1996, the Festival du Film de Contis has offered a unique cinematic interlude on the Landes coast. Nestled in the small village of Contis-Plage, in the commune of Saint-Julien-en-Born, this festival was born from the passion of Betty Berr and Rainer Wothe, a Franco-German couple who transformed a modest beach cinema into a recognized cultural venue, classified Art and Essay from its first year of operation.
The Cinéma de Contis, located at 39-55 rue des Avocettes, is described as a "unique", "magical", and "convivial" place. With three labels — Young Audiences, Repertoire and Heritage, Research and Discovery — it embodies a demanding vision of cinema, far from commercial circuits. It is in this setting that the festival unfolds its ambitious program each year.
The Festival du Film de Contis stands out for its program focused on European short films. Two short film competitions, a nano-film contest, and preview feature films form the heart of the program. Screenings are complemented by open-air cinema sessions, meetings with directors and actors, cinema workshops for children, and a "ciné-goûter" dedicated to young audiences.
The 2025 edition marks the 30th anniversary of the festival, thirty years of commitment to auteur cinema and the discovery of new talents. Over the years, the festival has showcased many filmmakers and has forged lasting ties with European cinema professionals.
Beyond the summer festival, the association Contis Culture et Cinéma animates the Contis cinema throughout the year with the Nano Club, special screenings, artistic and cultural education programs, the Talents en Court initiative, and the Maison Bleue, a place for artistic residence and creation.
The 31st edition of the Festival du Film de Contis is scheduled for June 2026 in Saint-Julien-en-Born with a new selection of European short films and preview feature films.
