Nature photography festival in the heart of Morbihan
Since 2020, the Festival Foto Natur en Argoat has highlighted the beauty of nature through photography in the heart of inland Morbihan, in Bignan. Organized by the local environmental education association Cardamines et Libellules, this festival offers an immersive weekend dedicated to nature photography in all its forms.
The festival presents about ten photographic exhibitions, some of which have never been shown in the region before. The themes cover a wide spectrum: wildlife photography (birds, mammals, insects), natural landscapes, macrophotography (flowers, mushrooms, nature details), underwater photography, and nature reports. Large-format prints allow for appreciation of the photographers' work in all its finesse and beauty.
The festival makes it a point of honor to promote Breton photographers, both amateur and professional, many of whom capture their images in the local area. It also welcomes photographers from other regions, offering a rich and diverse panorama of contemporary nature photography. The artists are present to interact with the public and share their passion and techniques.
Alongside the exhibitions, the festival offers nature photo rallies in partnership with the Bignan media library, inviting participants to explore the surrounding trails and natural spaces in search of photographic subjects. Introduction workshops on nature photography, conferences on biodiversity and ecology, and nature activities for children complete the program.
The festival's name refers to Argoat, the land of woods in Breton, which designates inland Brittany in contrast to Armor (the land of the sea). Bignan, a rural commune in central Morbihan, offers a preserved natural setting, with hedgerows, woods, and rivers, conducive to observing and photographing Breton fauna and flora. The festival is part of the environmental education mission of the association Cardamines et Libellules.
By car: Bignan is located 25 km north of Vannes and 20 km south of Pontivy, accessible via the D767. From Vannes, take the direction of Locminé and follow the signs for Bignan. Free parking near the exhibition venues.
By bus: Bignan is accessible by BreizhGo bus lines from Vannes and Pontivy. Stop in the town center.
The exhibitions take place in various locations in Bignan (56500): the media library, the communal halls, and outdoor spaces in the town center. An exhibition map is provided at the festival reception to facilitate the visit. Photographers are present at the exhibition venues to interact with the public and explain their techniques and artistic approaches.
Admission to the exhibitions is generally free or by donation. Photo rallies and some workshops may require registration.
The festival takes place over a weekend in November (Saturday and Sunday), from 10 am to 6 pm. Nature photo rallies take place outdoors, usually on Sunday afternoons between 2 pm and 5 pm.
For photo rallies, it is advisable to bring your own camera (DSLR, mirrorless, or smartphone) and clothing suitable for the autumn season and outdoor excursions (walking shoes, warm and waterproof clothing). Binoculars can be useful for wildlife observation.
Bignan is home to the Domaine de Kerguéhennec, a contemporary art center in an 18th-century castle surrounded by a park with contemporary sculptures. This exceptional site is worth a visit in addition to the festival. The surrounding countryside offers numerous hiking trails suitable for nature photography.
