Traveling storytelling in Périgord Noir

Every November, the Festival Le Léberou brings stories to life across the villages of Périgord Noir. For a month, storytellers from all over France and beyond travel to villages to tell stories in intimate settings: village halls, churches, barns, and village squares.

The legend of Le Léberou

Le Léberou (from the Occitan word la lèbre, the hare) is a legendary creature from Périgord. According to tradition, it is a man who has done wrong and who, to redeem himself, must cover himself with the skin of a fox, rabbit, wolf, or hare, dip himself in a fountain to become half-man, half-beast, and then pass through the moonlight under seven bell towers in the same night.

A festival for everyone

The festival offers performances for all audiences, from toddlers to adults. Evening sessions, often followed by a friendly moment with mulled wine or soup, create a warm atmosphere conducive to sharing. School sessions are also organized to introduce younger audiences to the art of storytelling.
