A festival born from a love of rural heritage
The Festival of Country Churches is a unique cultural event in the festival landscape of the Tarn. Born from a desire to highlight the rich rural religious heritage of Puylaurentais, this traveling festival invites talented musicians every summer to perform in small country churches, often isolated, which exceptionally open their doors to the public for a musical evening. The combination of the sober and moving architecture of these Romanesque or Gothic buildings and live music creates unforgettable artistic experiences.
Five Thursdays, five churches, five musical universes
The festival's format is unique: five traveling concerts, one each Thursday in July and August, in five different religious buildings in the canton of Puylaurens. Each evening is therefore a journey into a new heritage site, a new natural acoustic, a new musical program. The special acoustics of small country churches—their stone vaults, their silence, their intimacy—offer musicians and the public an exceptional listening environment, far from conventional concert halls.
Classical, jazz, and Celtic music
The festival explores three complementary musical universes:
- Classical music: string quartets, piano recitals, chamber music, and vocal works resonate in the stone naves with particular depth and emotion
- Jazz: acoustic jazz duos, trios, and quartets bring warmth and improvisation to these sacred spaces, creating unexpected and memorable encounters between musical genre and heritage
- Celtic music: harps, bagpipes, flutes, and Celtic violins make the ancient walls vibrate with their melodies from Brittany, Ireland, and Scotland, echoing the pilgrims of the Middle Ages
Puylaurentais, land of heritage
Puylaurens is a medieval bastide town in the Tarn, perched on a hill in the Lauragais tarnais, at the gates of the Montagne Noire. The commune and its surroundings hold remarkable built heritage: Cathar castles, abbeys, Romanesque chapels, and village churches that bear witness to the turbulent history of the Pays de Cocagne. The festival takes advantage of this rich heritage to promote live music in places where it resonates with particular intensity.
An intimate and convivial experience
The Festival of Country Churches is distinguished by its intimate and convivial atmosphere. The concerts take place in small churches that can accommodate a few dozen to a hundred people, ensuring a close experience with the artists and incomparable listening quality. After each concert, a convivial moment is often organized, allowing spectators to chat with the musicians and with each other in the bucolic setting of the village.
