A timeless tribute to seafarers
The Fête des Marins in Honfleur is one of the oldest and most vibrant maritime traditions in France. Since 1861, the Société des Marins de Honfleur has been organizing and perpetuating the « Pèlerinage des Marins » every Pentecost weekend. For three days, the Norman town pays a vibrant tribute to the seafarers, sailors, fishermen, and navigators who made Honfleur's glory.
Processions and boat models
The most spectacular moment of the festival is the procession of boat models through the streets of Honfleur. About a hundred ship models, carried by participants, parade through streets decorated with garlands of colorful paper flowers. Houses and facades display maritime decorations, creating a festive and colorful atmosphere throughout the town.
Blessing of the sea and pilgrimage
On Sunday, a moving blessing of the sea takes place on the harbor, paying tribute to sailors lost at sea and calling for divine protection for boats and their crews. On Whit Monday, the pilgrimage to the Notre-Dame de Grâce chapel, perched on the Côte de Grâce overlooking the Seine estuary, constitutes the spiritual highlight of the festival.
Festivities and entertainment
The Fête des Marins is not just about religious celebrations. Concerts, musical entertainment, sailors' meals, model exhibitions in the Greniers à Sel, and shows liven up the three days. The Société des Marins also offers guided tours and nautical activities on the Vieux Bassin. The atmosphere is popular, joyful, and deeply rooted in Honfleur's maritime identity.
