Celebration of the Limousin Black Bottom Pig
Every first Sunday of August, Ségur-le-Château, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, celebrates the Limousin Black Bottom Pig, an ancestral porcine breed from the Massif Central. This festive day, organized by the Brotherhood of the Limousin Black Bottom Pig, highlights this exceptional gastronomic heritage with tastings, rural entertainment, and discovery of this free-range breed.
The Limousin Black Bottom Pig is an ancestral porcine breed that has occupied the western Massif Central for several centuries. Recognizable by its white coat with a black hindquarters (hence its name), this pig is raised traditionally and naturally, outdoors.
Its meat is renowned for its exceptional taste quality, while the whiteness of its fat is appreciated by gourmets. This quality is notably due to the consumption of chestnuts, which are part of these pigs' diet in autumn. The breed almost disappeared in the 1980s, but thanks to enthusiasts, it is experiencing a remarkable revival.
The Brotherhood of the Limousin Black Bottom Pig was created in 1986 in Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche (Haute-Vienne), the cradle of this breed. In 2019, it was reactivated in Ségur-le-Château, in Corrèze, where the Great Pig Festival now takes place every first Sunday of August.
The Brotherhood brings together breeders, charcuterie makers, restaurateurs, and passionate amateurs. It works for the preservation and promotion of this emblematic breed, for the transmission of traditional know-how, and for the valorization of charcuterie products from the Black Bottom Pig.
The Festival of the Black Bottom Pigs in Ségur-le-Château is a friendly and authentic day. On the program: presentation of the breed with pigs on-site, tastings of charcuterie from the Black Bottom Pig (hams, sausages, pâtés, rillettes), know-how demonstrations, producer stands, and rural entertainment.
The event takes place in the exceptional setting of Ségur-le-Château, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in France, with its medieval streets, its castle, and its half-timbered houses. It's an opportunity to combine heritage and gastronomic discovery.
By celebrating the Black Bottom Pig, the festival contributes to the preservation of agricultural biodiversity and the valorization of endangered local breeds. It raises public awareness about the importance of supporting farmers who perpetuate animal welfare and environmentally friendly farming methods.
