Vergt, capital of the Périgord strawberry

Every third Sunday of May since 1992, the town of Vergt celebrates the Périgord strawberry during a popular and gourmet festival. The Dordogne is the 2nd largest strawberry-producing department in France, with 8,000 tonnes produced annually by 200 producers, just behind Lot-et-Garonne.

The giant tart and tastings

The highlight of the festival is the making of a giant strawberry tart containing 200 kg of strawberries and offering 900 servings to visitors. Local producers offer tastings of many varieties: Gariguette, Cigaline, Charlotte, Magnum, Mara des Bois... Visitors can discover and purchase strawberry-derived products.

Flower market and entertainment

A flower market is set up in front of the town hall, where horticulturists and nursery owners offer plants, shrubs, and strawberry plant pots. The festival also includes entertainment, rides, exhibitions, and a flea market throughout the day, as well as a local produce market.

A quality label

In 2004, the Périgord strawberry obtained the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), official recognition of the quality and origin of this emblematic production of the Dordogne.
