Maritime tradition, Provençal jousting, and popular festivities in the heart of Provençal Venice
Every year, at the end of June, Martigues pays homage to Saint Peter, the patron saint of fishermen, through a popular festival rooted in Provençal maritime tradition. The old fishing port of L'Île, the historical cradle of the city, comes alive for three days to celebrate the sea, the fishermen, and the deep identity of a city whose history is inseparable from water. The Fête de la Mer et de la Saint-Pierre is much more than just a festive event: it is an identity-building gathering that brings together native Martigues residents and visitors around age-old traditions.
The festivities begin on Friday evening with the famous sardine feasts on the Place de la Libération, where the public enjoys grilled sardines and seafood specialties in a friendly atmosphere. On Saturday, the program expands with traditional games in the square, a traditional rowing challenge on the town hall forecourt, followed by the solemn fishermen's mass at the Sainte-Marie-Madeleine church. In the late afternoon, the Saint-Pierre procession winds through the streets of the L'Île district, carrying the statue of the saint to the bridge, where floral tributes are cast into the sea in memory of lost sailors. The evening concludes with a fireworks display launched from the funfair at 11 PM.
The highlight of the festival, Sunday, is dedicated to the Saint-Pierre Provençal Jousting Tournament, the second round of the Provence Championship. Starting at 9 AM, on the honor quay of the town hall, jousters compete on the water in this ancestral sport which consists of knocking one's opponent off the tintaine, a raised platform at the stern of a boat. Categories follow one another throughout the day – Benjamins, Minimes, Cadets, Féminines, Juniors, and Seniors – offering a striking spectacle of strength, balance, and tradition. The trophy award ceremony concludes this sporting day.
In addition to the traditional festivities, a funfair is set up for over a week on the Place des Aires, with rides and attractions for young and old. The Venetian rowers, who have built their reputation in Martigues as much as the jousters, also participate in the entertainment with demonstrations of traditional rowing. The entire festival is free admission, reflecting the city's commitment to making this event a moment of popular and intergenerational sharing.
The Fête de la Mer et de la Saint-Pierre returns to Martigues for a new edition at the end of June 2026. As every year, the city of canals will celebrate its maritime heritage with the traditional sardine feasts, the Saint-Pierre procession and blessing of the sea, the Provençal jousting tournament counting towards the Provence championship, the traditional rowing challenge, old-fashioned games, and the fireworks display. The funfair will be set up on the Place des Aires for about ten days. All festivities are free and open to the public.
The festivities take place in the city center of Martigues, mainly around the L'Île district, Place de la Libération, and the Town Hall quay.
