Fête de la Musique in La Rochelle

Just like everywhere else in France since 1982, the Fête de la Musique turns La Rochelle into an open-air stage every June 21st. The city opens its public spaces to this major popular event, which is free and open to all musicians, whether amateur or professional: music fills the streets from the early afternoon until the heart of the night.

Street-level celebrations

Here, there are no big stages or headliners: municipal regulations strictly prohibit the installation of stage equipment—platforms, risers, or any device used to elevate artists. Bands perform at street level, inside bars and restaurants, on their terraces, or in the immediate vicinity. This is what gives the La Rochelle evening its intimate, acoustic character, as the city explicitly encourages acoustic ensembles in the spirit of a friendly, eco-responsible event.

Three sectors, one free-music zone

The festivities are concentrated in three contiguous sectors of the historic center: the Vieux-Port (quais Duperré, Valin, Maubec, Louis-et-Noémie-Durand, de la Georgette and Georges-Simenon, cours des Dames, and the streets Saint-Nicolas, Sardinerie, Saint-Jean-du-Pérot, des Carmes, du Palais, Léonce-Vieljeux), the Marché sector (place du Marché, and the streets Gargoulleau, Gambetta, des Merciers, du Pas-du-Minage, Thiers, des Dames, Saint-Yon), and the Hôtel de Ville area along with all adjacent pedestrian streets. From 6:00 PM, this entire perimeter is closed to motor vehicles and becomes a free-music zone.

Live music first

A specific feature of La Rochelle: until 11:00 PM, performances relying primarily on pre-recorded music—such as DJ sets—are not permitted in the secured areas. Only performances featuring live musical interpretation are allowed. After 11:00 PM, the sound level remains capped at 94 dB(A) measured at the perimeter or near building facades, and outdoor music must stop at 2:00 AM.

An eco-friendly event

The La Rochelle Fête de la Musique is a signatory of the La Rochelle Eco-Responsible Events Charter, with a level 3 commitment. Bars and restaurants prioritize reusable deposit-based tableware and set up waste sorting stations, while ashtrays are provided on tables. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own reusable cup and pocket ashtray.
