Medieval festival in the heart of Embrun's historic center in the Hautes-Alpes
The Embrun Medieval Festival is a summer event that transforms the historic center of this ancient archiepiscopal city in the Hautes-Alpes into a true medieval village for two days, on August 21st and 22nd. The program includes: a large medieval market with about forty artisans and producers, a historical encampment with combat demonstrations, parades of troubadours, dancers, and fire-eaters, workshops for all ages, an equestrian show, and a nighttime fire show. Admission is free.
Once an archiepiscopal city perched on a rock overlooking the Durance river, Embrun boasts a remarkable medieval heritage with its Notre-Dame du Réal Cathedral (12th-13th century), its cobbled streets, and its defensive towers. Every summer, the Embrun Medieval Festival brings this glorious era back to life by taking over the historic center for two days of festivities accessible to all, from 10 am to 11 pm.
The heart of the festival is its grand medieval market, which brings together about forty artisans and producers in the pedestrian streets of the historic center, from 10 am to 10 pm. Visitors can discover ancient crafts: blacksmithing, leatherworking, weaving, calligraphy, jewelry making, pottery, and woodworking. Local producers also offer medieval specialties and Alpine regional products.
A medieval encampment is set up on the Place de la Mairie, animated by historical reenactment groups such as L'Ost des Temps Jadis. The public can witness sword fighting demonstrations, tournaments for children, and discover daily life in the Middle Ages. Magical parades wind through the streets with giant puppets, stilt walkers, troubadours, dancers, and musicians in period costumes.
The program includes immersive shows on medieval justice and satirical tales, an equestrian training show, family workshops (coin minting, archery, giant wooden games), and an evening fire show that concludes each day in a magical atmosphere. Fire-eaters and flame jugglers illuminate the ramparts and alleys of the historic center for a spectacular finale.
