The gastronomic event of December in Berry
The Foire Grasse de Saint-Benoît-du-Sault is a major gastronomic event in the Indre department. Every year, on a Sunday in December, the medieval village of Saint-Benoît-du-Sault, classified among the Most Beautiful Villages in France, hosts this fair dedicated to fatty products. For over 20 years, this event has attracted hundreds of food lovers from all over Berry and beyond to prepare for the end-of-year holidays.
Producers from Brive-la-Gaillarde in Saint-Benoît-du-Sault
The originality of this fair lies in its partnership with producers from Brive-la-Gaillarde. About twenty producers from Corrèze and Lot travel to set up their stalls in the village streets. These farmer-producers offer high-quality farm products, stemming from ancestral know-how passed down from generation to generation in the gastronomic basin of the Southwest.
Nearly 6 tons of fatty products
Approximately 6 tons of products are offered for sale during this exceptional morning. The stalls are full of fresh and semi-cooked foie gras, goose and duck confits, dried or smoked magrets, stuffed necks, manchons, whole ducks and geese, confit gizzards, and rillettes. Fine charcuterie, artisanal chocolates, characterful cheeses, and accompanying wines complete this gourmet offering.
Arrive early to be served
The Foire Grasse is held from 9 am to 12 pm, and the advice from regulars is clear: you must arrive early to be served. Products sell out quickly, and some loyal customers reorder their purchases from the previous year with their favorite producer. The atmosphere is friendly and warm, set against the exceptional backdrop of the medieval village perched above the Portefeuille.
A medieval setting for an exceptional market
Saint-Benoît-du-Sault offers a remarkable setting for this fair. This fortified village, with its Benedictine priory, half-timbered houses, and cobbled streets, is one of the heritage jewels of the Indre. The Foire Grasse is an opportunity to discover this listed site while stocking up on exceptional products for holiday meals. A gourmet event that has become a must in the department's event calendar.
